Matthew 20:4
“You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.”
Jesus tells the parable of the landowner who hires laborers to work in his vineyard at the start of the day…during the middle of the day…and at the end of the day. They are all paid the same wage causing the ones who worked the longest to grumble. Jesus likens the vineyard to the “kingdom of heaven.” This is the kind of world God wants. The landowner is God. At the end of the parable the landowner asks the grumbling workers, “Are you envious because I am generous?” God’s love is free and abundant. There is no end. And it has nothing to do with our earning it or being worthy of it. This is Good News! We are all called to be happy for anyone who turns to God at any time of their life’s journey. God’s justice is restorative…not punitive. In the kingdom of God all are loved equally and abundantly. It has nothing to do with our goodness…but everything to do…with God’s.
