1 Corinthians 13:1-3
If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.
St. Paul’s words are profound. Love is the bottom line. It’s what life is all about. Nothing else is more important. But how difficult it is! As St. Paul goes on to say: “Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, love is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.” You can carry out all kinds of good works and follow the very letter of the law…but if you do not do so with love…it is meaningless. And if in carrying out the law you are not doing the loving thing…it is meaningless. Jesus said the two greatest commandments are to love God with all your heart, soul and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself. Love God, everyone…and yourself. God already loves you with no strings attached. You don’t have to earn it. Dear God, help me to love in the same way.
