Matthew 19:16, 21
“Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

The rich young man in today’s scripture wanted to earn his way into God’s kingdom.
He wanted to accomplish perfection. Good luck with that. It is impossible!
Jesus knew that the one thing this man could not part with in his imperfection was his wealth. The kicker is…he really didn’t have to give it all away to experience the freedom he was seeking.
The kingdom of God is not an accomplishment but a state of being.
It is not something you earn…but is a free gift.
It’s as free as the wind and the air we breathe. It’s offered to us out of pure unconditional love. That is hard to comprehend in our “quid pro quo” culture.
It is given to us not because we are good…but because God is good and because at our core each of us is infinitely loved.
That kind of love is hard to fathom…as long as we are attached to the things of this world and the false idea that they are what give us worth.
Eternal life begins now for those who are awakened…those who are free enough to receive it.
The rich young man in today’s scripture was attached to his material possessions.
Those things in and of themselves are not bad…as long as you are not obsessed with holding onto them…as long as you are not identified with them.
Accepting this no-strings-attached Love is life-changing. The passing things of this world will no longer be your treasures. Your treasures will be found in what is eternal.
We each need to ask ourselves this question: What am I clinging to that is keeping me from living the life God wants for me?
