Before taking action…what if we took a moment of silent reflection?

Luke 10:41-42
The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”

Our current culture seems to glorify “doing”…and certainly there is nothing wrong with doing things.
But it also seems to denigrate simply “being.”
It would seem that we need a balance of “doing” and “being” for a life well lived.
Without setting aside some silent time to listen…how can we discern the best thing to do?
Notice how Martha was described as “anxious and worried about many things.” The scripture also described her as “burdened with much serving” while her sister Mary was sitting peacefully at the feet of Jesus “listening to him speak.”
It would have been absolutely unheard of and scandalous at that time for a woman to be taking the position of a student of the master…a place reserved for men only.
Serving the men with her sister Martha would have been her expected role. But Mary’s true motivation was to do what God was calling her to do…and her heart was telling her to listen to Jesus.
Martha’s motivation, if pure, would have been equally good. But she was “burdened” no doubt because she was judging Mary.
If Martha’s motivation had been to truly serve God she would have done her part joyfully without regard to what others were saying or doing.
Mary chose “the better part” because she was following her heart in listening to Jesus.
Before making any decision, what if we paused a moment to ask God to help us?
And what if we also took a moment to examine our true motivation…whether it was to serve God or perhaps our egos?
