Before taking action…what if we took a moment of silent reflection?

Luke 10:41-42

The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”

+++

Our current culture seems to glorify “doing”…and certainly there is nothing wrong with doing things.

But it also seems to denigrate simply “being.”

It would seem that we need a balance of “doing” and “being” for a life well lived.

Without setting aside some silent time to listen…how can we discern the best thing to do?

Notice how Martha was described as “anxious and worried about many things.” The scripture also described her as “burdened with much serving” while her sister Mary was sitting peacefully at the feet of Jesus “listening to him speak.”

It would have been absolutely unheard of and scandalous at that time for a woman to be taking the position of a student of the master…a place reserved for men only.

Serving the men with her sister Martha would have been her expected role. But Mary’s true motivation was to do what God was calling her to do…and her heart was telling her to listen to Jesus.

Martha’s motivation, if pure, would have been equally good. But she was “burdened” no doubt because she was judging Mary.

If Martha’s motivation had been to truly serve God she would have done her part joyfully without regard to what others were saying or doing.

Mary chose “the better part” because she was following her heart in listening to Jesus.

Before making any decision, what if we paused a moment to ask God to help us?

And what if we also took a moment to examine our true motivation…whether it was to serve God or perhaps our egos?

Jonah 2:3

Out of my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me; From the midst of the nether world I cried for help, and you heard my voice.

+++

We’ve all been in a situation that was dark…where it appeared to be hopeless.

It’s part of our human experience.

But take heart that the God who created the galaxies also created you and loves you as a daughter or son.

Jesus said if you know him…then you know God (John 14:7). Jesus showed us God’s unconditional love by allowing himself to be unjustly persecuted and then put to death on a cross so that he could respond with love and forgiveness.

This is the face of God!

Jesus showed us that God would go to any extreme to save us from distress.

He showed us that death was not the end. There was resurrection and new life.

Love has the final say because Love is who God is (1 John 4:8).

Since you are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27), Love is also at your very core.

So know that in your distress…God is with you and for you.

Love Never Fails

Baruch 1:21-22

For we did not heed the voice of the Lord, our God, in all the words of the prophets whom he sent us, but each of us went off after the devices of our own wicked hearts, served other gods, and did evil in the sight of the Lord, our God.

+++

Some things never change.

Centuries  and centuries after today’s scripture was written…we are still doing the same thing. We must admit that this still applies to us today.

But ever notice how God’s love is not conditional like ours many times is?

God kept loving…keeps loving…despite being rejected over and over and over.

If you are struggling and are not proud of some of the things you’ve done…take comfort in the fact that God is not giving up on you.

God gave us free will…knowing that we would make mistakes.

Is that so we could then be punished for making those inevitable errors?

That would seem extremely cruel…and since God is love (1 John 4:8), that just cannot be true.

I’m thinking that God knew that the only way we could experience unconditional love was if we could experience being loved when we least merited it.

That kind of love would be transforming.

How else would we learn to love in the same way?

God is not looking to punish you…but to love you and forgive you.

God is for you.

God wants to see you grow.

What else would Love do?

Whatever your “shadow side” might be…it will likely be the key to your transformation.

So…bring your brokenness, shame and pain to God…and experience what Unconditional Love is!

Luke 10:8-9

“Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.'”

+++

Jesus sent out his messengers to tell everyone the Good News that would free them…and heal them.

“The kingdom of God is at hand for you.”

This means that God’s love for you is unconditional, does not have to be earned, and is available now

When you give that message to someone…when you live that message for someone…it is transforming.

Pass along God’s mercy, forgiveness and compassion to others.

Reach out to the margins and include the excluded.

Let go of your kingdom…so that God’s kingdom can break into the present!

Luke 9:59-60

And to another Jesus said, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” But Jesus answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

+++

How many of us believe in Jesus and are fans of his…but when it comes to actually following him…well that’s a different matter.

When it comes to following him, we make excuses

I’d love to follow you but I’ve got this or that to attend to first…or I’m too young (or old)…or I’m too busy right now, etc.

Jesus said that now is the time to follow…right now.

The “kingdom of God” needs to be proclaimed…and that means by you and right now.

What is the kingdom of God? It’s the state of being when God’s unconditional love and healing are shared.

Are we being vessels of God’s love, restoration and compassion?

When someone meets us today…will that person get the message that “the kingdom of God is at hand?”

Restoration – Not Revenge

sprout_rocks

Respond to hate with both compassion and conviction for justice.

Luke 9:52-55

Jesus sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” Jesus turned and rebuked them.

+++

Years of differences between the Jews and Samaritans resulted in the Samaritans shunning Jesus.

Two of Jesus’ disciples asked him if they could call on God to destroy the Samaritans in retaliation.

Isn’t this the usual human reaction…to attack those who have wrongly treated us?

Tit for tat.

It’s been going on for years…and years…and years…and years.

Violence perpetuates violence.

Jesus’ answer to his disciples’ question was a stern “no.”

It takes a “non-dual” mind, a consciousness that is able to hold all things without separating and dividing…to be able to respond in a new, nonviolent way.

It is from this mind that Jesus said, “Love your enemies” (Matthew 5:44).

Instead of seeking revenge, what if we all asked for the grace to respond to those who wrong us with both compassion and a conviction for justice?

Perhaps then the world would change one person at a time.

Be the change that you want to see in the world!

Grace Is Free

The Unconditional Love of God is always available if you accept it.

(Listen to my song “Pour Me Out” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Matthew 18:3

“Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

+++

Jesus tells us that child-like (not childish) awe and wonder is what it takes to enter into the “kingdom of heaven”…not just one day in the future…but right now.

When you are open to the Presence of God…you find it everywhere: In the sunrise; in the laughter of a child; in music; in art; in flowers; in trees; in a loving relationship.

When you are open to God’s Presence…you enter into it.

Jesus gave himself in love to all…even allowing himself to be crucified…to show us that true Love pours itself out for the beloved.

He loved unconditionally…even while undergoing the most unjust persecution possible.

Jesus put his total dependence and trust in God…like children do with their parents…because he trusted that new life was promised.

May we humbly put aside our egos, die to ourselves…and allow Unconditional Love to motivate us.

Because as St. Paul said, nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39).

Attitude of Gratitude

Know that an Eternal Love holds you.

+++

Psalm 138:1

I thank you, Lord, with all my heart.

+++

Stop.

Take a deep breath.

Take a few moments to acknowledge all the wonderful blessings in your life and the ultimate gift of eternal life.

You are a spiritual being having a human experience.

Even the so-called “bad” things that have happened to you will…with time and God’s grace…turn out to be your best life-lessons

As the late evangelist Robert Schuller once said, God will “turn your scars into stars.”

Adopt a spirit of gratitude.

Know that when you are going through tough times…God is still with you.

Allow Grace to embrace you and carry you to new life.

You will one day be able to use your transformational experience to help others going through similar struggles.

You are an integral part of God’s loving, unfolding creation.

Give thanks!

Haggai 1:6

You have eaten, but have not been satisfied; You have drunk, but have not been exhilarated; have clothed yourselves, but not been warmed; And he who earned wages earned them for a bag with holes in it.

+++

These are the words spoken by the prophet Haggai over 2500 years ago.

Isn’t it amazing that they are still true?

Do we not still try to satisfy a spiritual yearning with food, drink, fashion and material stuff that will wear-out and disintegrate

How will we find satisfaction for this spiritual yearning?

By loving God and our neighbor as ourselves.

Love is all you need.

In John 6:68 the apostle Peter said to Jesus, “You have the words of eternal life.”

Read the words of Jesus and follow his ways.

Then in the midst of struggles…your life will be filled with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and goodness…both now and forever.

Be the Gospel

Luke 9:2

Jesus sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

+++

Jesus wanted everyone to know that God loved them unconditionally right now.

It’s a Love available each moment…not just some distant day when we die and go to heaven.

Jesus wanted to demonstrate that when you practice this kind of love…you are helping to bring about the kingdom of God.

This kingdom starts here.

You and I are being called to do this.

How can each of us proclaim this kingdom to those in need of physical, emotional or spiritual healing?

Others can come to know God’s amazing, unconditional love through the way we live our lives.

Sometimes this healing Love is experienced simply through being truly present to someone else.

Sometimes it comes through forgiving others and yourself.

God forgives you.

Receive it…and pass it on.

Be a healer.
