Matthew 11:19

“The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is vindicated by her works.”

+++

Jesus is the one who represents the human and divine as the model for us all.

He enjoys his food and drink but does not abuse either.

All our experiences are for our enjoyment but not for our attachment.

Each of us is called to live as divine beings in human form.

As I often quote Teilhard de Chardin, “We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

Note how Jesus is aware of those who judge him for his actions.

Most of those people were the Pharisees, the religious leaders of the time who were very dualistic in their viewpoint.

They could only see things as black or white, good or bad, right or wrong.

This is an eitheror viewpoint.

Such viewpoints can lead a person to being a very harsh critic and also a hypocrite.

That’s why Jesus said not to judge others but to remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you would be able to see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother or sister’s eye! (Matthew 7:5)

Also, please note the humor in Jesus’s statement!

When you are able to have a non-dual viewpoint, you can accept reality as one without casting-out anyone or anything.

This is the viewpoint of God and Jesus.

It’s a bothand viewpoint.

You can both acknowledge people’s shortcomings and not reject them.

You can relate with others’ shortcomings because you know and acknowledge your own.

Jesus knew the oneness of us all in God’s eyes.

Certainly this is how St. Paul could see us as part of one body (1 Corinthians 12:27), and how he could say that in God we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).

When we are aware of living in the Beingness of God and that all people and all things are loved, there is a greater possibility that our words and actions will be based in love.

We might face criticism like Jesus did.

Then we will also know in our hearts that wisdom is vindicated by her works.

Matthew 11:12

“From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force.”

+++

Violence is not of God.

You can point all you want to the Old Testament, but all writing there reflects hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years of the human attempt to understand God.

When violent things happened, they believed it was from God.

When good things happened, they believed it was from God.

And when you wanted vengeance and you could believe that God was vengeful and violent, well then, you could be vengeful and violent as well.

But the only problem with this is that Jesus nullified it all.

He said if you knew him, then you would also know God (John 14:7).

Jesus is the human blueprint of God.

And what does Jesus say?

He says that loving your neighbor is of utmost importance (Matthew 22:39).

He says blessed are the merciful and the peacemakers (Matthew 5:7 and 9).

And to make it quite clear, Jesus ordered us to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44).

As Jesus stated in today’s scripture verse, “The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force.

How is it that those who call themselves Christian can condone the use of violence when Jesus specifically speaks against it?

Is killing your enemies loving them?

No.

The way of Jesus is love and forgiveness.

It’s not an easy way.

It may appear impossible.

But it’s the way we’re called to.

It will likely get you persecuted.

But as Jesus said, “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:12).

I choose the way of Jesus.

What will you choose?

Ephesians 1:11-12

In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will, so that we might exist for the praise of his glory, we who first hoped in Christ.

+++

We continue today with more comforting thoughts, this time from St. Paul.

Before today’s mystical and meaning-filled verses, Paul said that God chose us, you and me, in Christ, “before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him” (Ephesians 1:4).

So that means that we, you and I, were chosen by God in Christ before the world was established, to be whole and complete before God.

Let me say that again: You and I were chosen by God in Christ before the world was established, to be whole and complete before God.

This is really, really good news!

You and I are not depraved wretches as some toxic theology espouses.

Yes, we do things that miss the mark.

Yes, we occasionally do things that are hurtful to others.

But remember, as Teilhard de Chardin said, “We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

We are here in this realm to learn about love and to create in love in cooperation with God’s creative process.

Or as Jesus might have said, we are invited to take part in the coming of the kingdom of God in this time and place.

At our core, we are holy and without blemish before God.

We are human and divine, but in our humanness, we need to be reminded of this!

So, with this in mind, let us re-read today’s verses: In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will, so that we might exist for the praise of his glory, we who first hoped in Christ.

God accomplishes all things so that we might exist for the praise of God’s glory.

Take a deep breath.

Simply be.

Our existence gives glory to God.

When we realize our connection to Christ (or the loving-life-force of the universe), when we live from that awareness, we are channels of love as well as advocates for the outcasts.

Then, we truly do exist for the praise of God’s glory.

Or, might we say, for the praise of Love’s glory?

Isaiah 40:1

Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God.

+++

One thing I know for certain.

God is love (1 John 4:8).

I have experienced this as true many, many times.

I see it reflected in Jesus who said that if you know him, then you would know God (John 14:7).

Jesus proclaimed his mission statement in the synagogue at the start of his ministry, reading from the Prophet Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free (Luke 4:18).

How comforting is that?

Jesus gave us many comforting words, such as in the parable of the lost sheep.

He said, “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray? And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray (Matthew 18:12-13).

Allow these words to bring you comfort.

Be silent and feel the peace that surpasses all understanding deep within you.

Then, look upon a hurting world, not with eyes of judgment and criticism, but with eyes of compassion and comfort.

Hear God’s words spoken to you: “Comfort, give comfort to my people.”

Isaiah 35:6

Then the lame shall leap like a stag, and the mute tongue sing for joy. Streams will burst forth in the desert.

+++

Isn’t this our hope?

That all those who are suffering or afflicted with some physical limitation will be healed?

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if streams did burst forth in the desert and transform an arid land to one of bountiful vegetation?

The prophet Isaiah speaks of a God who does just that.

He comes to save you (Isaiah 35:4).

When you hear the word save, think make whole.

God restores.

This is what Jesus showed us with his life.

He said if you knew him, then you would also know God (John 14:7).

And what did Jesus do?

He healed the sick, restored sight to the blind, and restored the outcasts to their communities.

Jesus made people whole.

But let’s not forget that all the people Jesus healed at some future date died.

Even Lazarus had to die a second time!

None of us gets out of here alive!

Avoiding death is not the objective.

Living in the flow of death and new life is.

All of creation is taking part in this flow.

As St. Paul said, “All creation is groaning in labor pains even until now” (Romans 8:22).

We along with everything are living daily in the dying and rising cycle.

As Jesus said, “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit” (John 12:24).

Death-to-life is God’s pattern for creating.

All things pour themselves out for a greater good.

Leaves fall to the ground so that new life might be nourished.

St. Paul realized this as his death grew near when he said, “I am already being poured out like a libation” (2 Timothy 4:6).

Jesus showed us that all our service, all our being poured out like a libation, leads to new life.

And he ultimately showed us that physical death leads to the fullness of life transformed.

Love is winning – even when it might appear otherwise.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?

+++

This is another one of those scripture verses that would do us well to repeat to ourselves and ruminate on.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?”

Scripture also tells us that God is light (1 John 1:5).

And elsewhere it tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8).

This is in keeping with what many Near Death Experiencers are telling us, that they experienced a light brighter than they had ever seen, and that in that light they experienced a seemingly infinite love.

I’ve heard or read about hundreds of such cases.

I’ve also had the opportunity to meet a number of people who had such an experience.

These people say that they lost all fear of God.

The first letter of John goes on to say, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love” (1 John 4:18).

I experienced a taste of this Love while very sick from a ruptured appendix.

It happened in the middle of the night while in a hospital bed in 1998.

I can’t explain what happened.

I can only say that I knew in an instant that I was infinitely loved and that it had nothing to do with my worthiness.

Afterwards, I knew I had to share God’s unconditional love with everyone.

I do that today in my ministry to the homebound, the sick, those in jail, and I do it through my four albums and two devotional books.

I also do it right here.

Allow the light of God to shine upon you.

Allow it to dissolve all the pain, all the resentments, all the sorrows.

You are a beloved child of God.

Receive the Light and be free.

Psalm 118:1

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, his mercy endures forever.

What is your image of God?

Many times we form our images of God in our childhood.

Those images usually take the pattern of authority figures in our lives, such as our parents.

Chances are, if your father or mother was very critical, judgmental, and liable to punish you for missteps, then your image of God might be similar.

We might get the idea that we have to appease God – or else.

In the bible, I think we see reflected to us the progression over time of how human beings interpreted God.

If someone had an affliction, then people thought it was a punishment from God.

But Jesus specifically said that this was not so.

In the ninth chapter of John, verses one to three, Jesus is asked about a man born blind as to whether he or his parents had sinned.

Jesus replied that neither he nor his parents had sinned, but it was so that the works of God might be made visible through him.

When we see someone who is afflicted in some way, it usually evokes compassion in others.

Others are moved to come to that person’s aid.

And many times the afflicted person also overcomes great odds in carrying out great works.

These are all the works of God through people.

Today’s scripture verse says that God is good.

Do you believe that?

Who is the person in your life who you would describe as good?

God is infinitely more good than that person!

As Richard Rohr has stated many times: “God doesn’t love you because you are good; God loves you because God is good.”

I remember a time of a personal failure when, instead of feeling God’s wrath, I was inspired to write a song about the love of Jesus.

It came out of the blue like a total gift of grace.

I recorded that song, Come to Jesus, on my second album.

I later found out that a fellow jail minister was using that recording regularly in his ministry.

This, my friend, is the mercy of God that endures forever.

It is truly reason to give thanks.

For God is good.

Believe it.

Psalm 23:1

The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.

+++

I think it would be helpful to repeat today’s scripture over and over like a mantra.

“The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.

The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.”

This is so counter-culture!

We are immersed in a culture that tells us from every direction that we lack everything.

Advertisers are counting on us believing that if we only had this or that – then we’d be satisfied.

But today’s psalm tells me that I lack nothingif – the LORD is my shepherd.

Who is your shepherd?

Who is your guide in life?

By whose rules are you playing?

Stop for a moment.

Turn off the noise around you: the radios, the TV’s, the internet devices, the smart phones.

Turn off your non-stop-flood-of-thoughts as well.

When Jesus was asked by his followers how to pray, he said to go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to God in secret (Matthew 6:6).

He also said if you lose your life for the sake of the gospel that you would find your life (Mark 8:35).

So, go to your inner room.

Close your eyes and go inside yourself.

Let go of all the noise.

Let go of all the false images of who you are.

At your core, at the soul level, you are a beloved child of God.

And when you live from this place of belovedness – you lack nothing.

Then, as St. Paul said in Philippians 4:7, the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 4:21-22

Jesus walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.

+++

Do you yearn for a life-fulfilling purpose?

In today’s scripture passage, Jesus had just called Peter and his brother Andrew as they were fishing and promised to make them fishers of people.

They immediately dropped their nets and followed Jesus just like the next two brothers Jesus encountered.

They all had a profession – fishing – that was sustaining them and their families.

What was so captivating about Jesus that made them drop everything?

They perhaps had never encountered anyone who exuded more authenticity and inner peace.

His mere presence was enticing.

They had likely never felt so welcomed, accepted, energized, and calm all at once!

Who was this man?

He undoubtedly brought them hope.

Jesus was the bearer of the best news ever: that God loved all people unconditionally, and that love was our primary purpose.

He told us the two greatest commandments: Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind. And to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-39).

I also left my profession to follow Jesus, although it wasn’t so instantaneous.

While I was accomplished as a radio news anchor and reporter, I felt like there was something missing, something deeply meaningful.

Following Jesus seemed to bring me hope.

And when I did follow, songwriting seemed to spring out of nowhere.

A winding path eventually led me to youth ministry, music ministry, then chaplaincy and jail ministry.

It led me to recording four albums of original music as well as authoring two devotional books.

In all those things, I share the unconditional love of God.

How is Jesus, God, the Spirit, or the Universe calling you to share this love with the world?

Take some time each day for silent meditation to listen to your heart.

Centering Prayer is a wonderful practice.

Stay connected with nature.

Do creative things that you enjoy.

As Jesus also said: Seek and you will find (Matthew 7:7).

You just may live along some distant day into the answer.

The Hubble telescope has revealed an estimated 100 billion galaxies, but this number is likely to increase to about 200 billion as telescope technology in space improves, according to Space.com.

Look at the glory of the Earth, and look at the glory of each human being.

Each person is made up of trillions of cells, each with their own structure and function.

Basically, all things are made of the same stuff.

It’s a miracle beyond all understanding.

All of creation is energized into being.

St. Paul said that in God “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

In God, in Love itself (1 John 4:8), we have our being!

Words cannot express the glory of it all!

So make the decision to live from this place of love and not human-made delusion.

Take a deep breath.

You are alive.

You are a part of God’s glory!
