Luke 15:1-2

The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

+++

Again we see Jesus hanging out with the “wrong crowd.”

He’s eating with the so-called sinners.

Note that they are “drawing near to listen to Jesus.”

Jesus draws those in need of restoration to himself.

He does not cast them out.

But the Pharisees and scribes, who were holding all to the letter of the law, were unable to understand Jesus’ way of restorative justice.

So he went on to tell them the parable of the lost sheep.

Jesus asks them, “What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’

This is a heart-warming story – if you can relate to being the lost sheep!

If, however, you are like the Pharisees and scribes, it would not be so heart-warming.

How economically smart is it to leave the ninety-nine sheep alone in the desert while going off to find one who has broken the rules?

Jesus’ story is like a koan, which is defined as “a paradoxical anecdote or riddle, used in Zen Buddhism to demonstrate the inadequacy of logical reasoning and to provoke enlightenment.”

The question is: Do you relate to being the lost sheep?

Are you someone in need of restoration?

Or do you see yourself as the “ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance” (Luke 15:7)?

Jesus calls us to rejoice with him over the restoration of his lost sheep.

This is only possible when we realize that we are all one body, one human family, and also one with all of God’s creation.

Romans 13:8

Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

+++

St. Paul understood the Way.

That was what the Jesus movement was called in the beginning: the Way (Acts 24:14).

That’s because it was a way-of-life.

And that way-of-life was the way-of-love.

Paul knew well that Jesus had said that the greatest commandments were to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind; and to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:35-40).

When you love someone, you do not look for anything in return.

It is not quid pro quo.

This is not easy as you may know!

We are somewhat programmed by our culture and perhaps our genes that when we do something for someone, that we expect to get something back.

As a matter of fact, I know how hard it is to deeply examine my own motives at any given time to figure out if they aren’t based on some sort of reciprocity – that I’m really wanting something in return.

The Way of Jesus was based simply and solely on love, and not a list of rules.

If we truly based our words and actions on love, then compassion and justice would blossom.

“Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day.”

These are truly comforting words from Jesus.

We’ve all lost someone near and dear to us.

The grief of separation is real and to be acknowledged with compassion.

But allow the grace of Jesus’ words to be received in your heart.

Your lost loved one is not lost.

Your loved one has moved on to a place of infinite love.

Jesus seems to guarantee that all who come to him will be accepted without question.

This is unconditional love.

We see from the many accounts of Near Death Experiencers that they do in fact review their lives and experience all the joy and pain they caused, but they do it in the Light of Infinite Love.

They many times identify this Light as God.

This Light seems only to want us to learn from our actions and to experience Love beyond anything we can imagine.

I experienced just the tiniest glimpse of this Love while in a hospital bed following a ruptured appendix in 1998.

I had no words adequate to explain this experience that happened in the middle of the night when I was at my lowest – and I still don’t.

All I know is that when it happened, I experienced a Love that unifies all that is.

Allow my words to bring you comfort today.

Matthew 5:3

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

+++

Today’s verse is how Jesus starts one of his keynote teachings known as the Beatitudes.

These teachings are also probably one of the most ignored teachings by people who like to proudly proclaim they are “Christians.”

Blessed are: the poor in spirit; the meek; the merciful.

These do not reflect much of the rhetoric I’m hearing and seeing on social media or in the news in general from many self-proclaimed Christians.

Jesus’ first Beatitude really sets the table.

Blessed or happy and ready to serve are the poor in spirit, or those who are not clinging to possessions, fame, power, or prestige.

When we let go of those things we immediately begin to enter what Jesus called the kingdom of heaven.

As soon as we drop the masks, the false facades, the constant concerns about possessions, we are free.

We enter into an experience of spacious peace.

Here we discover that we are loved by Love itself.

Each of us is the beloved of God.

In this way-of-being, we are naturally a vessel of compassion and justice.

All it takes is letting go right now.

And now. And now

Luke 14:5-6

Jesus said to them, “Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?” But they were unable to answer his question.

+++

In today’s passage, Jesus had come to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees who were the religious leaders.

The people at this dinner “were observing him carefully” (14:1) because they wanted to catch him if he violated the sabbath law in even the slightest way.

(Note the similarity to Institutional rule-keepers today.)

Then, in their presence, Jesus healed a man who was suffering from a physical affliction.

This violated the rule against working on the sabbath.

That’s when Jesus made the statement in today’s scripture verses above.

For Jesus, doing the compassionate thing always trumped following the law.

Rules are meant to keep us in line in order that we might not stray off and do things that aren’t very loving and respectful to ourselves or others.

The rules, as such, are obviously important.

But for Jesus, love was always the top priority.

Is it ours?

Psalm 119:77

Show me compassion that I may live, for your law is my delight.

+++

What is the law of God?

In my humble opinion, it’s simply love.

When Jesus was asked to state the greatest commandment, he said: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37-40).

Love is something that isn’t measured out based on merit.

It is freely given.

This is the kind of love that transforms a person’s heart.

I remember a time of a moral failure.

I felt like I deserved punishment.

Instead, an inspiration came to me out of the blue for a song which then spilled out from heart to paper.

I ended up recording that song, Come to Jesus, on my second album (which was incidentally titled Live to Love).

Some years later I learned from a fellow jail minister that my song was his favorite to play for inmates at services he led.

He told me how much the song moved them.

God is always pouring compassion upon us.

It has saved me over and over and over.

It fills me with life.

Such a law fills me with delight!

Psalm 1:2-3

The law of the LORD is his joy; and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted near streams of water, that yields its fruit in season.

+++

The person today’s scripture is describing is said to be “blessed”.

The word blessed connotes someone who is happy and has many gifts.

However, the spiritual sense of this blessedness would not be about material gifts.

When someone is grounded in the law of God, one would certainly be grounded in love, compassion, and care for the marginalized.

You would be “like a tree planted near streams of water, that yields its fruit in season.”

Such a tree would be immersed in fertile ground.

This would describe a person who is immersed in the peace of daily communing with God or Love itself.

Some form of meditation such as Centering Prayer would be an essential practice.

These practices assist you in letting go of egocentric aims so that you are open to the aims of a Higher Power.

Then the fruit you would yield would be works that impart love, compassion, and care for all people.

As Jesus would put it, you would be “not far from the kingdom of God” (Mark 12:34).

You would be blessed with abundant life indeed.

Romans 6:17

But thanks be to God that, although you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted.

+++

St. Paul says a lot in a few words.

Earlier in this passage he says that “sin is not to have any power of you, since you are not under the law but under grace” (6:14).

It is grace that transforms us, not the law.

We can follow all kinds of rules, and the rules are important when we are immature and like children.

But once we have a foundation set by laws, we certainly need something more or we become harsh and judgmental critics.

We almost have to suffer some sort of fall, perhaps a huge moral failure, but instead of receiving punishment – we receive love and forgiveness.

We have to experience grace.

This is the way of God.

Then Paul asks the question many have asked: “Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Of course not!” (6:15)

It’s not like getting a free pass so we can now do whatever we feel like to satisfy any whim of our egos – because our hearts have been changed!

When our hearts are transformed by the Unconditional Love of God, there is no room for deceitful actions.

You will want to be “obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted.”

We will no longer act out of fear of breaking a law, but out of the joy of sharing the love we were gratuitously given.

Psalm 40:9

“I delight to do your will, my God; your law is in my inner being!”

+++

I think we would all delight in doing God’s will.

But I’m also thinking that many of us are not exactly sure what God’s will is.

Today’s scripture tells us that God’s law is in my inner being.

The truth is, we do not need to look anywhere outside ourselves to find God’s will.

We only need to get in touch with our inner being.

We only need to let go of our ego-generated-wants.

As Jesus put it, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 16:25).

Some form of meditation such as Centering Prayer is very helpful.

In Centering Prayer, you set aside 20 minutes or more to simply practice letting go.

As you let go, you rest in God.

As St. John of the Cross said, “Silence is God’s first language.”

All we need to do is be present because God is Presence.

When Moses asked for God’s name, God said “I AM” (Exodus 3:14).

And as St. Paul said, in God “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

The more we connect to this inner beingness, the more grounded our lives will be in God, and the more grounded our lives will be in Love itself since God is love (1 John 4:8).

Get to know your belovedness in God.

Share this love with others in your words and actions.

What else could be more delightful?

Luke 10:8-9

“Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.’”

+++

There it is again – that curious phrase that Jesus keeps using but for some reason was practically never talked about in my Christian upbringing.

It seemed we thought the kingdom of God, or kingdom of heaven as Jesus would also use, was about the place you go to when you die.

But Jesus used the phrase over and over in reference to the now, not the future.

It would seem to be the main emphasis of his ministry!

Jesus spells it out quite clearly with the first statement he makes in his ministry after John the Baptist was arrested: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15).

The kingdom of God, the experience of total freedom in peace, love, and grace, is available right here and now.

All you need to do is repent, which means change your direction.

Turn away from the ways of the world, and believe the gospel.

The word gospel means good news.

That good news is that you, me, and everyone and everything is infinitely and unconditionally loved by God.

Jesus sent out his followers in pairs to bring that good news to anyone who would listen.

When you gather together with others and consciously enter into this realm of Grace, I guarantee you that healing will occur.

Healing is a restoration of wholeness.

It may or may not happen in the physical body, but the important thing is that it happens spiritually and emotionally.

Your body is not permanent.

Your spirit or soul is.

This is God’s free and gratuitous gift.

That, my friend, is really Good News!
