Luke 12:1-3

Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples, “Beware of the leaven—that is, the hypocrisy—of the Pharisees. “There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops.”

+++

Jesus was always pointing out the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, the religious leaders of the time, who seemed to be obsessed with laws and appearances.

Jesus was more concerned about a person’s motives and what was in their hearts.

That’s why he railed against the Pharisees elsewhere in scripture: “You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence” (Matthew 23:25).

The point is to be real with yourself and others.

All pretenses will be seen for what they are in the light of truth.

As Near Death Experiencers are confirming, we will all one-day stand before the Light of Truth and Love.

In this Light, nothing will be hidden.

Why hide behind masks and elaborate fabrications created by our egos which will do anything to appear right and perfect?

The NDEers testify to a Light that exudes infinite Love beyond all description.

It’s a Light that shines love upon everything.

We are here to reflect that Light so that the kingdom of God comes alive.

It’s already here, but many can’t see it.

As Jesus said, “The coming of the kingdom of God cannot be observed, and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or, ‘There it is.’ For behold, the kingdom of God is among you” (Luke 17:20-21).

“Among you” is also translated as “within you.”

Jesus was talking about an experience of love, mercy, grace, forgiveness and compassion.

It’s available now to those who drop all pretenses and open their hearts.

We are meant to be agents of this experience so that the Light of Love shines brightly in this time and place.

Psalm 130:5-6

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits and I hope for his word. My soul looks for the LORD more than sentinels for daybreak.

+++

The word “wait” can connote a feeling of impatience.

But I don’t think that’s what today’s scripture is trying to convey.

I feel the sense of waiting it is talking about is more a being present to what is.

In this openness to simply allow what is to be as it is, there is no anxiety.

If there is a sense of anxiousness, then I need to let go of it immediately and settle back into the present moment where all is well.

And then, while being in the moment, my soul waits for inspiration.

The Spirit is at work at all times.

But until the Spirit’s inspiration prompts me to action, there is no reason to worry.

As Jesus said, “There is no reason to worry about your life” (Matthew 6:25).

He goes on, “Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?” (Matthew 6:27)

Jesus also said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid” (John 14:27).

It’s really about fear, isn’t it?

What is going to happen?

Sure, struggles will happen as that is part of life.

But the outcome is never an end.

Jesus demonstrated that all dying leads to new life.

Letting go is the key.

If all our daily little deaths lead to life, so will the death of our bodies.

My soul, my spirit, my consciousness, will go on.

Jesus showed us this, and Near Death Experiencers are confirming it.

If God is love (1 John 4:8), then you and I are safe and sound.

As long as we abide in this Love, what will unfold is always going to lead to new life and goodness.

Psalm 62:2

My soul rests in God alone, from whom comes my salvation.

+++

As St. Paul stated, perhaps quoting poetry, it is in God that “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

When I am present to this Mystery, simply present in the now, resting in this Unknowable Presence, I am free.

It is from this experience that I know that “there is nothing I lack” (Psalm 23:1).

I am whole and complete.

Doing has nothing to do with it!

It’s about being.

I know that I am known by the Knower of All.

Since God is love (1 John 4:8), I am resting in Love itself.

Some form of meditation such as Centering Prayer is very helpful.

But walks in nature are also a help in experiencing the presence of the Divine Presence, a peace beyond all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

You don’t really have to go anywhere to experience this peace.

For, as Jesus stated, the kingdom of God is among you, also translated as within you (Luke 17:20-21).

Psalm 19:2

The heavens declare the glory of God.

+++

The many people who wrote the bible over hundreds and hundreds of years had no idea of the actual size of the universe.

They thought the sky was like a dome with lights affixed to it.

Little did they know that the radius of the observable universe is estimated to be about 46.5 billion light-years and its diameter about 93 billion light-years.

A light-year is a unit of astronomical distance equivalent to the distance that light travels in one year, which is nearly 6 trillion miles.

There is no way our puny human minds can have any reasonable understanding of this gargantuan size.

And the whole thing appears to be expanding.

We humans are tiny indeed.

In comparison to the universe, we are so infinitesimally tiny as if to not exist at all.

But we do.

And each of us is as molecularly complex as a galaxy.

The whole thing is mind-boggling.

Ignatian spirituality says that we can find God in all things.

St. Francis called the sun brother and the moon sister.

He called the Earth mother.

To Francis, all creatures reflected God.

Everything declares the glory of the Creator.

St. Paul intuited that in God “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

Allow awe and wonder to rise within you.

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

You and I are spiritual beings encased in space dust in the midst of a Great Love.

Psalm 98:3

All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

+++

What is the salvation of our God?

I truly don’t think it has anything to do with saving you from any form of punishment.

If God is love (1 John 4:8), and if Jesus was serious about commanding us to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44), then certainly God would do the same.

God’s love is eternal and unconditional.

That is really the salvation of our God.

Can a person choose not to be with God?

I have no idea.

I leave room for that possibility, but I have no idea how an infinitely loving God would give up on such a person.

That is for theologians to argue over.

I have no interest is such matters.

I have personally experienced the overwhelming and unconditional love of God when I least deserved it.

When I experienced it, it was as if I was a part of an Eternal Oneness that included all things.

In that experience I knew I was one with this Wholeness of Love.

There are really no words to explain it.

But I do believe that this All-Encompassing-Love includes all of the material worldall of the universe.

I have been chosen to spread this Good News.

I believe the universe accepts it joyfully.

As always, you can choose to reject it.

That would seem a hellish thing to do.

It’s your choice.

Luke 11:20

“If it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”

+++

What did it mean that Jesus drove out demons?

What exactly were these demons that were thought to take up residence inside people?

I’m fairly certain that the people of the time thought any illness was caused by a demon.

That would include, of course, any mental illness.

When Jesus was said to “cast out demons” from people, he was healing them.

He was restoring them to health.

But this healing came on more than just a physical level.

The healing came especially on the emotional and spiritual levels

What hurts and traumas do we carry from past wrongdoings inflicted upon us?

Life will eventually hand us some painful things to deal with.

But healing or wholeness is available to anyone who consciously aligns with the Divine Presence.

Jesus said it was “by the finger of God” that he drove out demons.

Since God is love (1 John 4:8), it was the pure energy of Love that Jesus channeled through him.

Healing came to people on many levels, especially in their hearts.

Through this their lives were transformed.

Then they, too, might be instruments of this Love through their words and actions.

As Jesus is quoted as saying, “Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these” (John 14:12).

If we did this, the kingdom of God would truly be at hand.

Luke 11:9

“Seek and you will find.”

+++

What is it that you are seeking?

This is a good question to ask yourself.

What you seek you do tend to find.

If you are seeking reasons to gripe, you will no doubt find them.

If you are seeking reasons to be grateful, you will no doubt find them as well.

Do you believe in a God of wrath and punishment or a God of love?

If you believe in the wrathful God, you will no doubt find reasons to believe that that is what God is like.

And the same goes for the God of love.

Jesus is quoted as saying that if you knew him, then you would know God (John 14:7).

While Jesus is quite stern and firm in dealing with hypocrites (usually the religious leaders), he is not with so-called sinners.

Jesus is compassionate and caring to those who are missing the mark.

He enters into relationship with them and then, through his care and concern, they are moved to change their ways.

Jesus shows us the face of God depicted in another scripture verse that states: “God is love” (1 John 4:8).

When we know that God is love and that we are eternally loved, then we tend to want to share that love with others.

We tend to listen to our hearts’ desires instead of our egos’ desires.

These desires rise from our deepest selves, which would be one-in-the-same with the holy Spirit’s desires for us.

Jesus said that if we know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will God “give the holy Spirit to those who ask him? (Luke 11:13)”

So, ask for the Spirit to inflame your heart.

Then you can’t help but to find.

Because in the seeking you will be finding in each moment of the way.

Psalm 86:4

Gladden the soul of your servant; to you, Lord, I lift up my soul.

+++

Do you ever think about how you are more than your physical body?

We sometimes talk about our soul as though it’s something apart from our true self, but it is our true self.

Our soul is who we are in the eyes of God.

Our soul is eternal.

As Pierre Teilhard de Chardin said, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

There are literally thousands of accounts from Near Death Experiencers who are attesting to life after death.

Many have related as to how they were floating above their lifeless bodies in a hospital room.

Many have talked of having further mystical experiences with a Light that exuded an infinite love that they could not put into words.

Their human hearts had stopped.

Their breathing had ceased.

But their consciousness had somehow continued.

And in their encounter with the Light of Immense Love, each realized they were deeply and infinitely loved.

When their soul returned to their resuscitated bodies, they had a new outlook.

Most then embarked on new journeys of sharing God’s love through their unique gifts and talents.

What better way to glorify the Great Giver of Eternal Life?

Psalm 130:7

For with the LORD is mercy, with him is plenteous redemption.

+++

As I’ve said many times, Jesus told us that if we knew him then we would know God as well (John 14:7).

Jesus was the master of mercy.

He reached out in compassion to all those who were suffering.

And even to those who were so-called sinners, Jesus extended mercy.

Look at his interactions with the woman caught in adultery (John 8:2-11) and Zacchaeus who was described as “a chief tax collector” (Luke 19:1-10).

Jesus did not ostracize those who were guilty of wrongful behavior.

He engaged them.

He opened his heart to them.

Jesus did not condone their behavior, but neither did he condemn the person.

Jesus saw the beautiful spirit inside everyone.

He saw the child of God that they were.

As the scripture states at the end of the Zacchaeus story, Jesus came “to seek and save what was lost” (Luke 19:10).

This means that he wanted to restore those who were broken.

We are here on this earthly plain to love and to take part in the creative process that is the unfolding of what Jesus called the “kingdom of God.”

Jesus opened people’s hearts to seeing their belovedness in God.

There is no end to God’s love and therefore no end to our redemption.

Each of us needs to hear God’s words to Jesus as if they are to us: This is my beloved child, with whom I am well pleased (Matthew 3:17).

Allow God’s love to transform your heart.

And then, as Thomas Merton famously put it in New Seeds of Contemplation: “We are invited to forget ourselves on purpose, cast our awful solemnity to the winds and join in the general dance.”

Luke 10:25-28

There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”

+++

The scholar of the law wanted Jesus to give him some magic formula to get some future reward.

Jesus asked him what was the most important teaching in the law, and the scholar nailed it.

Love was the most important thing: love of God and neighbor.

Notice that Jesus then tells him that if he truly did this, if he truly loved God and neighbor with all his heart, being, strength and mind, that he would live.

Live.

That means now.

And now.

And now.

When we live from this foundation of love for all, we are present to all with compassion.

That is all that is required for the fullness of life both now and always.
