Live Your Calling

Psalm 25:4

Make known to me your ways, Lord; teach me your paths.

Isn’t it true that we spend a lot of our time trying to get our way and blaze our path in this world? This is the agenda of our egos. God’s agenda for our lives will likely have nothing to do with our ego’s agenda. Which agenda will lead to inner peace and happiness? You were made for a purpose. Wouldn’t it make sense that your Maker would know that purpose? How will you ever know God’s ways and God’s paths for your life…if you never ask your Creator to show you? God gives you free choice. Why not set aside silent time to listen to the small, gentle, loving voice speaking inside your heart?

O God of the Journey, your gift of life unfolds
in seasons to reveal the mystery and depth
of your love.

You ask us to bend with the winds and rivers
of change so that we may continue to reflect
the infinite variety of your Being.

Open us to the grace of the moment
so that we may never cease thanking you
and being a blessing
for those with whom we dwell.
And in every cross and triumph to come,
may our faith lead us, without fail,
to know your presence intimately
and to experience the joy and beauty of your peace. Amen

Have Faith

Isaiah 48:17

I, the Lord, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go.

One of the seemingly worst times in my life when I suffered a ruptured appendix…I now look upon as one of the most wonderful times. It was during that time of suffering that by God’s grace I came to know Compassion at a very deep level. I experienced God’s pure unconditional Love when I was completely helpless. There was no hint of quid pro quo. The Love was given gratuitously. It was life changing. This is who God is and what God does. Wherever you are experiencing pain and hurt right now…allow God to enter in and embrace you. Trust. God will lead you to a better place…and transform you.

Be Your True Self

Psalm 145:10-11

All your works give you thanks, O Lord, and your faithful bless you. They speak of the glory of your reign and tell of your great works.

All living things live with clear purpose…no schemes or ulterior motives. Trees, birds, animals, insects, etc. simply are themselves to the fullest extent of their being. They do not look in envy upon anything else…comparing or judging. A dog does not say, “What a shame I cannot fly like that bird”…and then become dejected and depressed. No…a dog frolics in its “dog-ness.” Even all inanimate objects are themselves without a trace of conflict. In doing so…all things are in a constant state of being themselves…and therefore are giving glory and thanks to their Maker. May we be mindful of this and do the same in each moment of our lives. Do you know that you are a precious, unconditionally loved work-of-art…just as you are…flaws and all? Live in that knowledge!

Be at Peace

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Life brings with it its share of challenges. Those challenges can become burdens unless we turn to a Higher Power. We can “tap into” this Source of Life at any moment. God…who is Love (1 John 4:8)…is always present to you when you are present to God. Jesus personified this Presence of love, mercy, grace and compassion. He sought out those who were rejected, those who were suffering and in need. This same Love is pursuing you. Invite this Love into your life. One way to do this is through a relationship with Christ. Allow him to be with you in your challenges. Let go of your ego’s demands which will never bring you peace…and follow the “Prince of Peace.” Allow the Presence of this peace to enfold you and to fill you. See and feel what happens.

Be Open

Luke 1:38

Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

With this response, Mary delivers the line that is the most profound example for each of us on how to live our lives. I’m sure she had her own plan…her own vision for her life. But upon hearing from the angel what God’s plan was for her…to conceive Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit and that the child would be called the “Son of God”…she says “yes.” Wouldn’t we all admit that what God wants for us would make us the most happy?  So wouldn’t it make sense to rely on a Greater Power to tell us who we are and why we’re here? What does God want for you? Saying “yes” to God will not mean a life of no troubles…but it will mean a life of purpose, peace and inner joy beyond measure.

Redeeming Love

Isaiah 35:4

Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; With divine recompense he comes to save you.

The Prophet Isaiah spoke of a God who rescues us out of great love. His writing was interpreted to tell of the coming of the Messiah hundreds of years before Jesus was born. “Be not afraid” was one of the most common quotes of Jesus. He showed us who God is: Unconditional Love, Mercy, Forgiveness and Compassion. Contemplate that…and then ask yourself: What is there to fear?

Believe

Matthew 9:28-30

When he entered the house, the blind men approached him and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they said to him. Then he touched their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.” And their eyes were opened.

Do you ever think that you are just not good enough to be loved…that you just aren’t worthy enough? Do you desire healing of some affliction or struggle but feel like you aren’t worthy of Jesus’ attention? If so…you are not alone. It’s a common misconception. Does Jesus question the two blind men about their worthiness? Does he quiz them on their beliefs and behaviors? Does he scold them or shame them about something they’ve done in the past? No! Jesus simply asks if they have faith in him…and then heals them. This is what Unconditional Love does. Jesus shows us the heart of God. Invite Jesus into your heart…and experience healing!

Love Is Blind

Isaiah 26:4-5

Trust in the Lord forever! For the Lord is an eternal Rock. He humbles those in high places, and the lofty he brings down.

How often do those idolized by the world…eventually fall. It’s a virtual guarantee. No one is perfect. Eventually we see that anyone held up as an “idol” will show imperfections. And the higher the pedestal we place them on…the further they fall. Before we pass judgment, aren’t we all a complex of contradictions? Don’t we all have our inner “shadows”…those places of weakness that we just can’t seem to overcome on our own? Instead of pretending those shadows aren’t there…instead of trying to stand on a pedestal of adulation or put anyone else up on that pedestal…may we humbly let the Light of Love shine upon us and all that is. God holds each of us, contradictions and all, in a tight embrace of unconditional love. Jesus showed us how to do this. Are we ready to do the same?

Eternal Light

Isaiah 25:8

He will destroy death forever. The Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces; The reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth; for the Lord has spoken.

Centuries before Jesus of Nazareth, the Prophet Isaiah predicted the coming of the Messiah…the Great Hope…God-made-flesh. His birth would bring a Great Light into the world and “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). Through the life of Jesus we see this Light shining love, mercy, grace, forgiveness and compassion into the world. Through his death and resurrection we see that death has no hold on us…it is merely a passageway to eternal life. So why not invite the Light of Christ into your life more fully? It is a Light of pure love and acceptance that claims you as a beloved daughter or son. Allow this Light to shine through your unique personality, talents and passions and then witness your true self blossom into fullness.
