God Is With You

John 8:29
“The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him.”

Jesus knew who He was. He came to know this through His close relationship with God. This way of being was no doubt modeled to Him by His father and mother, Joseph and Mary. Jesus then cultivated this relationship with God through quiet prayer…spending time in prayerful meditation alone. He allowed God to name Him and define Him (“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” – Matthew 3:17). Their relationship was intimate. Are you in an intimate relationship with God? Your Loving Creator wants to commune with you. Set aside some special one-on-one time to simply be present with the Divine Presence.

Do Not Fear

Psalm 23:4
Even when I walk through a dark valley, I fear no harm for you are at my side.

When you feel rejected…buried in troubles…lost…remember that Jesus felt the same feelings in the most extreme way. The Son of God chose to be fully human and in the name of love and justice allow Himself to become the one rejected, cast-out, despised and finally nailed to a cross to die in the most painful and humiliating way…so He could share in our humanity and show that no matter how bad…all struggles lead to new life. Jesus also shows us the true face of God in that Jesus had no condemnation for His killers…only forgiveness. It is like Jesus saying to each of us, “Don’t you see? No matter what you do…I will hang with you and not reject you!” This is unconditional love poured out. What seems unbelievable…is true. This is God’s Love for us both now and forever! The Risen Christ invites us to take the same path to new life.

Love Wins

Psalm 34:19

The Lord is close to the broken-hearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed.

Jesus was always going to those who were on the outside looking in. He went to be with the rejected, those regarded as “sinners” and those who were physically sick. He didn’t shun them but loved them and returned them to wholeness. He accepted them without condemnation and with no conditions. He never required others to adhere to any belief system before He included them. Then…Jesus became the one thrown-out and rejected to show us how intimately He relates to all of us who have had our hearts broken and spirits crushed. And then…in return for such anguish and torture being inflicted upon Him…He forgave and showed compassion. This is Who God Is. Trust in Jesus! Come to Him…just as you are. The risen Christ promises you new life.

Listen to Your Heart

Matthew 1:20
The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.”

What a deeply spiritual man Joseph must have been. How connected he must have been to God…open to receiving a message from a “Higher Source” than his own ego. The message he received in a dream was enough to change his mind about Mary…and to change the whole course of his life! Are we open to hearing and seeing messages from God? Are we expecting a life-changing message that will lead us to wholeness and peace? Or are we clinging to our comfort zones, resisting change and immersing ourselves further and further into the noise of the world? God is calling you to new life…but are you listening? Are you paying attention to God’s Presence in you and all around you?

Not My Will But Yours

John 5:30

“I cannot do anything on my own; I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.”

A while back I had a bizarre dream. I was among a few people taking part in some type of class outside in which we were taking turns reading what God was saying to us in all the surrounding scenery. I remember I was simply reading the scenery as if words were somehow communicated in each thing. I don’t remember much about this but I do remember that I was reading a frayed rope…and I awoke with these words still clear in my mind: “But in the moment do not be thinking of yourself”…the rest trailed away. In centering prayer we simply sit in silence and surrender each moment…allowing our egos to fade away. It is the practice of “dying to yourself” and allowing God’s will to become more clear. Jesus was the master at this…but we all need plenty of practice. How about starting…in this moment?

Eternal Help

Psalm 46:2

God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress.

If you’re like me you call on God almost automatically when confronted with trouble. I remember vividly the phone call from the hospital in the middle of the night several years ago with a voice telling me that my father was dying and that I needed to come immediately. I remember driving the short distance down the highway to the hospital invoking God’s name over and over to be with my dad. I was totally focused on the present moment…which seems to be the case whenever we are confronted by such a distressing situation. I had no doubt that God was indeed with my dad, my mom who was at his bedside…and me. God is always as keenly present to us…but we are not always as keenly present to God. It seems it takes these times of distress for us to fully awaken to the sacred now. Whether or not you are in distress…awaken…and be in the presence of the Divine Presence…right now. God is always right here with you.

Resurrection Is Coming

Isaiah 65:17-18
Lo, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; The things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind. Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create.

God is always about the business of loving and creating. The hurts and the pains of the past are shadows. They are gone. Where there is pain and suffering…trust that God is reaching out to be a Loving Presence. Those who are open to God’s Presence are able to mirror that love to those in need. In each moment, God is renewing all things. God is turning sorrow to joy, defeat to victory, death to life. God wants to do that for you. Trust that new life is in the making! And when you do experience this new life…will you then be open to being a channel of God’s loving creativity? Will you cooperate with God’s invitation to use your gifts and talents to take part in building God’s kingdom?

Keys to Life

Mark 12:32-34

The scribe said to Jesus, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, ‘(God) is One and there is no other than he.’ And ‘to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself’ is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”

The scribe had asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was and Jesus had answered that it was to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself. How are you doing with that? Jesus is interested in each of us being transformed through God’s unconditional love and forgivenessnot through our own doing (sacrifices). God’s love is freely given…not earned. When we experience this flow of receiving and giving love…that is when we begin to experience the kingdom of God. Each of us has to take this greatest commandment to heart. If all we did was live out that greatest commandment in each moment…we would be “not far from the kingdom of God.”

Listen

Jeremiah 7:23
This rather is what I commanded them: Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper.

The message is clear. If we “walk in all the ways” that God commands us…we will “prosper.” But prosperity in the Kingdom of God is not the same as prosperity in the world. Power, prestige and possessions may make you rich in this world…but all those things will disappear. Love, joy, peace, kindness…these are the riches of God’s kingdom. We can have these when we walk in God’s ways. But how do we know “God’s ways” for us? Jesus often said that “the kingdom of God is at hand” so that we would know that “God’s reign” (God’s dream for you) is possible in this very moment…if we are listening to God’s voice. That means spending some time in silence; spending some time being present to what is happening in each moment of our lives. That means letting go of our ego’s desires so that God’s desires can rise within us. Jesus is the perfect model to follow. He often went off to pray in solitude. He told us to go to our inner rooms and not to babble with many words (Matthew 6:6-7). What are the “ways” God is commanding us to walk in now so that we “prosper”? The time is now…to listen, look and be present.

Good News

Deuteronomy 4:9
“However, take care and be earnestly on your guard not to forget the things which your own eyes have seen, nor let them slip from your memory as long as you live, but teach them to your children and to your children’s children.”

God’s constant message from the beginning of the bible to the end is: “I love you.” There are no strings attached. But we humans seem to have short memories…easily forgetting God’s fidelity and care…slipping away to worship other idols. This continues to this day. But God does not abandon us…no matter how many times we turn away. Just look at the pattern repeated over and over throughout the bible. God is forever faithful. Then just so we can’t miss the message, Jesus showed us the face of love, mercy, forgiveness and compassion….even when persecuted and rejected. He allowed Himself to be crucified…and while hanging on the cross…He forgave everyone even when no one had asked to be forgiven. That, my friend, is Unconditional Love! That is Who God Is. Let us remember this…and pass it on!
