Psalm 23:1

The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.

+++

This scripture verse is like a precious mantra to me.

Say it again: The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.

It brings great peace in many circumstances, whether times of trouble, fear, sorrow, or anxiety.

Saying these words to myself brings comfort.

It’s the knowledge, and not just the knowledge, but the experience that there is Something Greater, a Higher Power, that is holding me.

As St. Paul put it, in God we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).

Each of us as well as all of creation is immersed in God.

In my time of need, like a wandering sheep, I turn to my Shepherd, the One who loves me unconditionally and will lead me.

In this wondrous, loving Presence – I am whole and complete.

I lack nothing because I have all that I need.

With each breath I know that I am being affirmed as God’s beloved.

And so are you.

John 5:44

Jesus said, “How can you believe, when you accept praise from one another and do not seek praise that comes from the only God?”

+++

Wow.

This resonates deeply with me.

It’s a good gut-check for all.

What is my motivation for what I do and say?

Am I seeking praise from human beings or am I seeking praise from God?

Actually, it’s probably best not to seek praise at all because that would be an ego thing.

My ego can inflate over looking more holy just as it can inflate over looking more powerful, attractive, wealthy, or any other worldly gauge of so-called success.

Trying to be successful in the eyes of our culture is an ego trip to nowhere.

You end up with a false self who never lived as your true self.

How sad that would be!

Do not let this happen!

Your life-giving change happens now — always now.

That’s the only time that is realnow.

Let go of desires to be famous or recognized.

Allow a Deeper Presence within you to rise.

As Jesus put it: “Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” (Matthew 16:25-26).

Let us ask ourselves before speaking or acting: What is my true motivation?

If it’s love, compassion, and doing the good, then amazing things will begin to unfold in each next moment.

Live your life!

Psalm 145:8-9

God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in mercy. God is good to all and compassionate toward all of creation.

+++

Is this your image of God: gracious; merciful; slow to anger; abounding in mercy?

Your image of God might depend on what you were taught.

It might also depend on what type of people your parents were – especially your father since many view God as male.

But God cannot be defined by any words that we can apply in the human language and is certainly beyond gender.

How could we define the ineffable?

We can only speak of God in metaphors as in: God is like this or that.

One scripture verse depicts God as love itself (1 John 4:8).

St. Paul said that in God we “live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

Love itself would be more of a verb than a noun.

And according to St. Paul’s description, God is Beingness itself!

If we would simply live from this place of the beingness-of-love, this place of spacious compassion and mercy, then we would be at peace even amid the storms of life.

Jesus said this experience is always available.

He said the kingdom of heaven is within you (Luke 17:21).

The key is to escape the domination of your addictive thoughts and the control of your mind.

Step back from your thoughts.

Let them dwindle and diminish.

A meditation practice such as Centering Prayer is very helpful.

Let go of all the fearful and painful stories that have controlled your life.

What are the fearful stories that you have been telling yourself?

Let them go! They are fictions!

Be present to a deeper place within of peace and love.

Experience the peace that surpasses all understanding.

Ezekiel 47:9, 12

Wherever it flows, the river teems with every kind of living creature; fish will abound. Where these waters flow they refresh; everything lives where the river goes. Along each bank of the river every kind of fruit tree will grow; their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail.

+++

In today’s scripture from the prophet Ezekiel, the river is the key to the flourishing of everything living in it and around it.

All these living things are benefiting from this source of life without any expected quid pro quo.

They are all receiving the gift of life.

But without knowing, they are not only receiving but giving.

The trees near the banks of the river emit oxygen for the benefit of other living creatures.

The living creatures feed upon other living creatures in the river, and even their waste products are used for food for tiny microorganisms.

Nothing goes to waste in the grand circle of life.

There is a metaphorical River fueling each of our lives as well.

This Life-Giving-Energy is always Flowing.

We are immersed in it.

You might call it God in whom we live and move and have our being as St. Paul put it (Acts 17:28).

We are called to say “yes” to its Flow and allow it to carry us.

It is then that we will bear much fruit.

The life our souls are given in these human bodies is a total gift.

But it is not ours to hold on to but to give away.

This is the beauty of Love, of the Divine.

How magnificent, wondrous, and glorious it is!

Isaiah 65:17-18

See, I am creating new heavens and a new earth; The former things shall not be remembered nor come to mind. Instead, shout for joy and be glad forever in what I am creating. Indeed, I am creating Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight.

+++

Creation isn’t finished.

God is always creating.

This Creativity is always in the mix.

It’s part of the death-to-life-to-death-to-life formula of existence in this realm.

Everything in the universe is subject to this reality.

God, who is Love (1 John 4:8), is making all things new.

That includes you and me.

The good news is that new life is in the making.

The bad news is that death is part of the deal!

So, to be averse to change, to be contrary to growth, is to be against the very nature of God.

To try to be static and stagnant is to refuse to take part in the dance we’ve all been invited to join.

It seems that it is only human beings who have a choice as to whether we will accept the invitation.

We have free will.

God wants us to be part of this Creative Process in sharing love.

What joy and delight we would all experience if we took part!

What a joy and a delight we would all be if we did this!

What do you say?

Are you ready to take part in this joyous Creativity?

What do you need to let go of so that your creativity can come to life?

Luke 1:28

“May it be done to me according to your word.”

+++

When I read this one sentence from the mother of Jesus, this morning, it really struck me.

It usually does.

As the story goes, Mary had just found out that she was going to conceive by way of the Holy Spirit and give birth to the Son of God.

How’s that for an unexpected curveball?

Talk about the proverbial rug being pulled out from under you!

That’s when Mary made her statement of radical surrender.

The question is: Do we believe that God’s plan for us is better…far better…than anything we had planned?

By God’s plan, I don’t mean some set, step-by-step, completely laid-out plan.

I mean a general trajectory plan.

Each of us has a mission here.

Based on Jesus telling us that the greatest commandment is to love God and your neighbor as yourself, it follows that love is what we’re here to give and receive.

It’s how the kingdom of God breaks into the present moment.

It emerges from within each of us as we allow it.

It’s a bright light within each person.

It’s your true self, your untarnished, glorious soul.

But first we must shed all that covers it – the many masks and false trappings that our egos have constructed.

Who are you really?

A beloved child of God, that’s who!

From this awareness may we all say: “May it be done to me according to your word.”

Jeremiah 7:23

Thus says God: This is what I commanded them: Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk exactly in the way I command you, so that you may prosper.

+++

This message from God delivered by the prophet Jeremiah is a message I never received in my religious upbringing.

“Listen to my voice.”

Listen to God’s voice?

How?

First off, you need to be quiet so you can hear.

You need to be present.

You need to be aware of your mind’s non-stop mental commentaries that you are addicted to.

You need to allow them to subside.

A meditation practice such as Centering Prayer is very helpful in bringing this openness to presence into your daily life.

Sometimes it is difficult to know the way God is commanding us to walk.

We are bombarded with so many other voices whether they be from social media, advertising, our parents’ and cultural upbringing, our teachers, or our religion.

We also are under the influence of the biases of those who taught us.

There is so much noise!

What noise can we start to filter out?

It would be helpful to cultivate a quiet place within where we can simply rest in God, rest in the presence of the Divine Presence.

If God is love as scripture tells us (1 John 4:8), then God wants us to prosper.

But, while prosper may mean in the way of wealth, that certainly is not the main objective.

As Jesus said, “You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24), mammon meaning wealth that has become a fixation.

When we regard wealth as another form of energy to channel for good and loving purposes, it can be very positive.

God, or Love, would want us to prosper as in flourish and grow.

When we are operating from a place of openness to the Divine Presence, we will naturally channel this Loving Presence through our words and actions.

What could be more prosperous than that?

Deuteronomy 4:9

Moses told the people, “Be on your guard and be very careful not to forget the things your own eyes have seen, nor let them slip from your heart as long as you live, but make them known to your children and to your children’s children.”

+++

Moses gives us all a great reminder today about experiencing the sacred.

Too often religion has centered only on head-stuff: doctrines, dogmas, rules, and beliefs.

But here, Moses reminds the people to “be very careful not to forget the things your own eyes have seen, nor let them slip from your heart as long as you live.”

And not only that, but Moses also instructs them to then make these experiences “known to your children and to your children’s children.”

What is it that you have seen with your eyes?

Are your eyes open to see the sacred in your midst?

This takes presence, being awake to the now.

It’s very common for people to be so caught up in their mind’s non-stop commentaries that they literally are not present to what’s actually happening around them.

Many are so attached to their streaming thoughts that they are literally attached to them.

They aren’t even aware that it’s going on.

The first breakthrough is the awareness that your mind is on overdrive.

A meditation practice such as Centering Prayer is helpful in this regard.

Take a moment and simply look at something in your line of vision without any commentary.

How long does it take before your mind starts interjecting thoughts or labels?

Thinking is a necessary activity and our minds are an essential tool in living, but there are times we would do well to simply be.

Just sit and let go.

Enjoy the inner peace.

Practice this in ordinary life.

Look around and enjoy what is.

The sacred is all around you – if only you are open to receive it.

You’ll be amazed at the treasure trove of heartfelt experiences you’ll be able to share!

Psalm 25:8-9

Good and upright is God, therefore God shows sinners the way and guides the humble in righteousness.

+++

Today’s scripture verses are beautiful and true.

First off, God is good.

God is Goodness.

As I often quote from the first letter of John, God is love (1 John 4:8).

Do you believe that?

Through my ministry, I’ve met many elderly people who are afraid of God.

They fear punishment.

What a huge disservice their religious leaders have done to them over the years!

As the first letter of John goes on to say, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love” (1 John 4:18-19).

So what would perfect love do?

Like any good parent, it would show us the way.

We have all experienced being, in religious terminology, sinners.

We have all wandered off the path of goodness and love.

Usually this is because our thoughts and mental commentaries have taken over.

Our egos have forged false constructs about who I am, usually as a way to protect this false image.

In my life, I had to see all my false images crash.

I had to see that there was not true and lasting happiness in holding up these false constructs of me.

The momentous time this happened was on the first Friday of March in 1997 when I literally admitted that I gave up in all my attempts at creating a happy life.

In the silence of that surrender, I heard a silent whisper to get my guitar, a guitar I hadn’t touched in ten years and had hardly played since I was a kid.

From that day, I have allowed Creativity to channel through my imperfect body and brain.

Today I look with gratitude upon the graced life that unfolded despite my ego’s many attempts to hijack the process.

My message to you is that renewal happens in each moment of unencumbered openness.

While pop culture might not look upon me as successful, I humbly thank God for each moment of this glorious earthly experience.

In religious terms: Amen and Alleluia!

2 Kings 5:14-15

So Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of God. His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. He returned with his whole retinue to the man of God. On his arrival he stood before him and said, “Now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel.”

+++

When I got to these two verses in reading from Second Kings, tears welled-up in my eyes.

That’s how I knew these were the lines for my reflection today.

Tears are a sign of the Spirit’s tender interior movement.

Today’s verses involve Naaman who was an army commander for the king of Aram.

Earlier in today’s reading, it says that Naaman was valiant but was also a leper.

On the advice of a girl captured in Israel, the king sent Naaman to Israel to seek the prophet Elisha for a healing. Elisha tells Naaman to wash seven times in the Jordan River.

This angers him as ridiculous, but his servants convince him to do it.

Naaman does and is healed.

That’s when he returns to Elisha in thanksgiving and praise of God.

It seems to be a very common thing for humans to look to God for some miracle.

If it happens, we are overwhelmed with joy.

But, alas, Naaman will still die one day.

What if years later life subjects him to many calamities?

Would he look back and rather that he simply died of his leprosy?

The question is: Do we depend on miracles or positive events to believe that God is good?

In this earthly realm, death and life are weaved into the fabric of all that is.

This is part of the biology of the reality of this existence.

Whether something seemingly good or bad happens, God remains good.

God is Love as the first letter of John states (1 John 4:8).

We are all held in the matrix of Love, if you will.

As St. Paul put it: In God we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).

When we observe our thoughts, allow them to fade, and simply are present, we bask in the glory of life.

Each of us has received the gift of life!

Each of us has eternal life!

Breathe in this gratuitous gift of life.

Accept what is.

You can always work to change a life situation that you don’t like, but do not resist and refuse to accept what is.

That only creates suffering.

No matter the situation, God’s love is always present and never ending.

There is nothing to fear!

Allow this to change you.
