Mark 9:7

Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; then from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”

+++

This is one of those major moments in the life of Jesus known as “The Transfiguration” when Peter, James and John heard God’s voice giving them a powerful message:

Jesus is the beloved Son of God…and they should listen to him.

As followers of Jesus, we also are called to listen to him.

How do we do this?

Try spending some time in solitude reading Jesus’ words in the Gospels and then sit in silence and allow those words to speak to you in the depths of your heart.

“Listen to him.”

These are God’s words to each of us.

Are we taking time to listen?

St. John of the Cross said, “God’s first language is silence.”

That’s why some form of contemplative prayer is also important…a time of silent listening…to allow your incessant thoughts to cease.

If you make this a practice, I promise that your life will change for the better.

Trust…and you will be led to new lifeinner peace and your true self.

Be You

masks

To be your true self…you will have to drop the masks you’ve spent years crafting.

(Listen to my song “Take the Road Less Traveled” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

Matthew 13:54-57

He came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. They were astonished and said, “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Are not his sisters all with us? Where did this man get all this?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.”

+++

Some people seem to think that not changing is a medal of honor.

They praise people for holding tight to a position…and they ridicule people who change a position.

But listening to new information, weighing it, and then changing your view is many times the mark of a wise person.

Life can change a person as well. It ought to.

It ought to broaden your viewpoint. That’s because there are many, many other viewpoints different than just your own.

When you follow the self-emptying path of Jesus…your life is meant to change.

Like he said, “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit” (John 12:24).

We are meant to “die” to our own self-centered desires…so that our true self can rise and bear “much fruit”.

This will require dropping the trappings of our false self…all the various masks that we fashion and wear.

On a trip to Jerusalem at age twelve, Jesus was said to have “astounded” the teachers in the temple with his understanding. And then the scripture says, “Jesus advanced [in] wisdom and age and favor before God and man” (Luke 2:52).

He grew. He changed.

After his transformational experience in the desert following his baptism by John the baptist, Jesus returned to the town he grew up in. He was a man with a mission.

And the people there “took offense at him.”

To be your true self, you must be willing to follow your calling.

This will lead you to change.

This will challenge others to change as well. Then, you can count on others to “take offense.”

If and when this happens, it’s helpful to find a community to support you.

Know this: The living Christ will never abandon you.

Have faith in this…and live.

Give Thanks

Psalm 146:2

Praise the LORD, my soul; I will praise the LORD all my life, sing praise to my God while I live.

+++

Sometimes the troubles of the world…the injustices…the pain and suffering…can be overwhelming.

It is easy to fall into pessimism and cynicism.

But stop for a moment.

Really stop.

Do not get drawn into the mire of human-created, ego-driven delusions based on greed and self-centeredness.

Allow your mind’s non-stop commentary to cease.

Take a deep breath.

Just breathe.

Each of your breaths is a gift.

Life is a gift: the sunshine, green grass, flowers, singing birds, your pet dog or cat, your loved ones…all gifts.

A Zen master was once quoted as saying, “What in this moment is lacking?”

Psalm 23 states, “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.”

In this moment…I am whole. I have all I need.

I am loved.

Jesus told us that the greatest commandments were to Love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

Love is what matters most. It is the Life-force that is sustaining us right now.

Stop and sense it.

It is all gift.

Dwell on that…and then sing praise to the Love that made you!

Awakening

flying_bird_blue_sky

Inner peace is free…if you let go of everything.

(Listen to my song “Breathe On Me” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Matthew 13:44

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

+++

Earlier in this passage, Jesus talked about the kingdom of heaven being like a mustard seed that is planted and secretly sprouts.

We are meant to be sowers of this seed…by spreading compassion, forgiveness, mercy and fairness so that the kingdom of heaven might blossom into the here and now.

This kingdom is SO valuable, SO worth experiencing…that it would be worth selling all that we own to attain it.

And Jesus said that we would do so…with joy.

Perhaps if we could sever our attachments to our possessions, as well as to power and prestige, we would be free to find this spiritual treasure.

Once these attachments are no longer at the root of our motivations…as they often are in consumer cultures…we would be open to receiving the treasure of God’s unconditional love and acceptance that is always offered.

We would be open to receiving all the gifts that God pours out upon us…and then to sharing them freely.

Up to this point…the kingdom of heaven just seemed hidden.

It’s available to all who are willing to let go of their attachments…and be present to the Divine Presence.

Go with the Flow

The way to new life is through the struggle…not around it.

(Listen to my song “Make Your Way” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Psalm 79:11

Let the groaning of the imprisoned come in before you; in accord with the greatness of your arm preserve those doomed to die.

+++

Life is not easy.

It will hand you difficulties. That is a certainty.

Those struggles can end up being your greatest teachersif you allow them to be.

The key word is “allow”.

First, we have to accept the is-ness of the moment.

You’ve heard the saying, “It is what it is.”

That doesn’t mean you can’t work to change a situation…but there is a needed acceptance of what is.

When you oppose and rail against what is…you create suffering for yourself and others.

There is and will be pain in life.

Bring that pain to the One who is always with you.

Be with the pains and struggles and allow a Higher Power to lead you through it.

Jesus showed us that even the worst scenario…a crucifixion…can lead to a transformed, new life.

Gaze upon Jesus on the cross…arms stretched open in solidarity with you and all the suffering in the world.

Trust that transformation is ahead.

Death is not the end. Love will be victorious.

Growing Compassion

dandelion_planting_field

Each of us is called to take part in God’s love story.

(Listen to my song “May I Be Light” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Matthew 13:31

Jesus proposed another parable to them. “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field.”

+++

The kingdom of heaven is evolving in the here and now.

Just like a tiny mustard seed under the dirt…it is growing.

But it is usually not seen because it is hidden from plain view.

But nonetheless, it’s sprouting.

And each of us is expected to be a sower of this seed.

Jesus clearly expected us to take action as God’s instruments in bringing about the kingdom of heaven in the here and now.

How are we being called to sow the seed of God’s kingdom so that it grows in this time and place?

To know…we must be awake and alert to the Divine Presence…which means we must be focused on the present moment.

That is where our Loving Creator dwells…always loving us and wanting to commune with us.

Now is the time and place where we can channel Love and Light as only each of us uniquely can…by planting seeds of God’s kingdom…or we could call it, God’s peaceable community.

Stand in the Light

flowers_colorful_sunshine

Allow Love to nurture and guide you.

(Listen to my song “I Stand in the Light” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Matthew 13:22-23

“The seed down among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

+++

Jesus tells us that we are like seeds scattered on the ground.

God’s word is our nourishment.

It is a fertilizer that gives life through unconditional love and forgiveness.

It is like the sun…always shining down upon us.

We would experience such growth and blossoming if we would allow this fertilizing Love to saturate us.

But sometimes we get overwhelmed with the thorns of anxieties and troubles.

We also get lured by the thorns of material goods and wealth.

God’s Presence and nourishment is meant to give us abundant life and the fruit of coming to know our true selves.

Then we could become the fruit of God’s love to others.

God’s nourishment is constantly being offered to us through each of our senses…but at the same time our senses are being bombarded with all kinds of other poisons.

We have to strengthen ourselves with contemplative prayer or meditation, spiritual reading, or doses of communing with God in nature.

We have to allow the water of God’s love to spur our growth through reflection and discernment.

Otherwise we wither.

If we stay present to  God’s loving Presence…we will grow even amidst the thorns…blossoming fruit that we could never have imagined.

One wonderful way of cultivating the soil of our life situation is by following the examples set by Jesus.

Boundless Grace

galaxy_mountains_night

God’s love has no borders. How about yours?

(Listen to my song “How Magnificent, Wondrous and Glorious” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

(revised post from July 21, 2016)

+++

Psalm 36:6

Lord, your love reaches to heaven; your fidelity, to the clouds.

+++

The psalmist is saying that God’s extreme, extravagant love is so immenseso amazingso beyond what we can fathom…it boggles our minds.

It’s beyond reason.

God’s love actually goes well beyond the clouds…which were likely the limits of the psalmist’s imagination.

God’s love holds the entire universe…which is still expanding as best scientists can determine.

It is made up of at least two trillion galaxies.

The diameter of the observable universe is a sphere around 92 billion light-years…give or take a billion!

God…who is Love (1 John 4:8)…is still creating.

This is Love that is infinite.

It is Love with NO conditions!

Throw out rational logic. It cannot be fathomed.

Just accept it.

This is a Love that cannot be defeated.

Hate cannot withstand it.

Each of us is loved simply because we are God’s beloved.

It has nothing to do with what you do…but who God is.

Allow that to settle in your heart.

If you do…it will transform you.

And that is exactly what God wants…so you can then share it with others.

Let Go and Live

acorn_ground_green

When our egos surrender…we are truly free.

(Listen to my song “Slow Me Down” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

2 Corinthians 4:11

For we who live are constantly being given up to death for the sake of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

+++

St. Paul is giving us a key to discovering our true selves.

Jesus showed us that the way to life…is through death.

To those who don’t know this…it sounds morbid. But this has been so since the beginning of the universe.

All things eventually die and give themselves over to the creation of new life.

Jesus showed us how to do this as an every day practice.

It is a constant process of dying to our egocentric desires for power, prestige and possessions so that God’s desires can rise in us.

When I let go of my ego’s desires…there is an opportunity for God’s desires to be manifested.

When I let go of material stuff…I discover the fullness of life in the present moment.

As Jesus said, “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

Giving up our egocentric pursuits will feel like dying. But it’s only part of the process…if we are open.

In this process, I come to know God and my true self.

When I follow the path of Jesus…I can be the hands and feet of the Living Christ to the world.

Jesus showed us that even the body’s final death is not the end.

As he said to God as his crucifixion loomed, “If it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39).

He showed us that through our struggles and even death itselfnew life is birthed

Gospel

universe_star_bright

The Source of the universe…is Love.

(Listen to my song “Lift Up Our Voices” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Micah 7:18-19

Who is there like you, the God who removes guilt and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance; And will again have compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt?

+++

The prophet Micah speaks here of the God that Jesus knew well.

It is not a judgmental, punishing God…but a God of love and forgiveness.

Our Creator, who is Love (1 John 4:8), constantly pours out Love (Godself) on all creation…accepting us exactly who we are in our imperfection.

God works with everything…continuing to create in love.

And we are here to be a part of it.

God yearns for us to know love and to be love…demonstrating this fully in the life of Jesus.

Jesus healed and forgave.

He met hate with love and forgave those who crucified him while hanging on the cross…even when they had not asked for forgiveness (Luke 23:33-34)!

And his death was not the end…but a grand, new beginning.

Resurrection and new life was to follow.

Love will win out.

As St. Paul said, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).

This is Good News!
