Love Is the Answer

Mark 12:32-34
The scribe said to Jesus, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, ‘(God) is One and there is no other than he.’ And ‘to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself’ is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”

The scribe had asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was and Jesus had answered that it was to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself. How are you doing with that? Jesus taught us in the “Our Father” to pray: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Did you catch the “on earth” part of that sentence? Why do so many Christians make their faith an “evacuation” project to a future heaven…when Jesus clearly wants it to be a “redemption” project in the here and now? Jesus is interested in each of us being transformed in the present…not just getting to a future heaven. Each of us has to take this greatest commandment to heart. If we lived it each moment…we would be not “far from the kingdom of God.”
