Galatians 3:10
All who depend on works of the law are under a curse.
This sounds confusing. We are told to follow the rules…but then St. Paul tells us that if we depend on “works of the law” (in other words, the rules) that we “are under a curse.” Following the rules does indeed keep us in line. We know that is especially true with children. They need rules to make sure they don’t get into trouble. But when we grow up…while the rules are still good and with purpose…we soon come to realize that we cannot possibly keep them all perfectly. And there is a good reason for that. We can’t depend on the rules to make us whole (or “holy”). We can’t depend on following rules to lead us to the fullness of who we are as sons and daughters of God. We can only depend on God to do that. By building a relationship with Jesus…we are well on our way. He shows us that the goal is always to love…not to follow rules. God loves to love us in our brokenness. That’s what we call “grace.” It is always freely given. And that’s what makes all the difference!
