John 13:14-15

If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.

John’s gospel is the only one of the four in the bible that does not include the Eucharist.

It has been replaced by the story of Jesus washing the feet of his followers at the Last Supper.

This does not diminish the importance of the Eucharist…as it was well established by the time the Gospel of John was written…but it is telling.

It would seem to say that receiving the Eucharist is just halfway.

The second half of the action is…you must become it.

It means that when you receive the body of Christ…you then must become the body Christ to the world.

And how do you do that?

By washing the feet of others.

By serving.

As Jesus said, “The greatest among you must be your servant” (Matthew 23:11).

He called his ultimate, counter-cultural lesson “a model to follow.”

That’s because…in the eyes of God…when you serve the other, you serve yourself and Christ.

You also receive an abundant life.
