1 John 4:20

If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

Of course, it’s not just our “brother” we need to love…but our enemies as well (Matthew 5:44).

That was one of those “non-negotiables” right from Jesus’ mouth.

It’s also roundly ignored and virtually never preached.

We must love everyone.

As a matter of fact…love is the most important thing of all: Love God and your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:34-40).

Today’s scripture makes it clear that to love God you must love the other.

That includes the immigrant, the asylum-seeker, the gay person, the transgender person, the Muslim, the poor person, etc.

And it also includes terrorists and those people in that political party that you can’t stand.

Let us begin with the next person we meet.

It is the only way that the delusion of divisions will dissolve.
