Mark 1:21-22
Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
+++
The scribes taught on the strict authority of the Torah.
It was all there in black and white.
The law was the law.
But Jesus came along and taught on his own authority.
He would pick and choose scripture to make his point.
Jesus only used the verses that pointed to the God that he knew…the One that was all loving, compassionate and forgiving.
And note that when Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was (Matthew 22:37-39), of his own authority he picked from two different books of the Torah.
“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind (Deuteronomy 6:5). This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18).
For Jesus, love ruled.
We are called to do the same.
