Luke 16:19-21

“There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table.”

In my opinion, Jesus isn’t trying to threaten you with the punishment of an eternal hell when you die if you don’t help those in need.

He’s simply trying to show you that what is happening now matters and has eternal repercussions!

If you miss the opportunity to help the person in need nowyou missed it.

You will never have that opportunity again.

And when you miss it, you create a “hell” for the person in need.

I do believe you will have to face this in the afterlife – but in the light of Unconditional Love.

Remember, God is love (1 John 4:8).

Experiencing the sorrow of not helping those in need while standing in the light of God’s love will indeed be painful…but it is we who will inflict that pain on ourselves, not God.

God will love us no matter what.

Who is the person in need lying at your door?

You may say that there is no one lying at your door, but in this day and age of technology we cannot claim ignorance of those living in poverty and in desperate need of help.

We are globally aware.

Just as the rich man in Jesus’ parable could not claim ignorance of the man who was lying at his door under his very nose, we cannot claim ignorance of people living in desperate need anywhere on the planet.

The question is: What is my response?

This is the question each of us needs to ask.
