John 14:21
“Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”

On the surface, this sounds like Jesus is saying you must love him as a condition for being loved by God.
That would make Jesus and God very petty.
And since God is love (1 John 4:8), that simply cannot be so!
There is more under the surface of this quote.
Plus, we don’t have access to the original Aramaic language that Jesus spoke so we aren’t privy to the many nuances of his language.
I’ve come to learn that a LOT is often lost in the translations.
This is my take.
Jesus is the incarnation of God.
Therefore, if you love Jesus you are loving God and so of course God will love you.
It’s what Love does.
The love of God will come back through Jesus to you and you will know Christ.
It’s all about relationship.
The love of God has been incarnating throughout all of creation since the big bang (and probably before that).
The spirituality of St. Ignatius (founder of the Jesuit order) has always proclaimed that God can be found in all things.
Jesuit theologian Teilhard de Chardin said this: “God is not remote from us. He is at the point of my pen, my pick, my paintbrush, my needle – and my heart and my thoughts.”
St. Francis also found God’s love in all things like the sun, the moon, the wind, the water, all creatures and the Earth.
If you want to experience God’s love…simply awaken to its presence everywhere – including inside of you.
There, too, is the dwelling place of God.
