Acts 17:24-25; 27-28
“The God who made the world and all that is in it, the Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in sanctuaries made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands because he needs anything. Rather it is he who gives to everyone life and breath and everything…so that people might seek God, even perhaps grope for him and find him, though indeed he is not far from any one of us. For ‘In him we live and move and have our being.’”

How can we describe God?
Can we distill the Creator into a definition?
Impossible!
Yet in today’s scripture passage, St. Paul does better than most.
He tries to capture in words what is beyond words.
First off, Paul says that this ineffable Mystery cannot be contained in “sanctuaries made by human hands.”
God is so much bigger.
And yet, this God is also “not far from any one of us.”
God is not out there somewhere.
And then St. Paul gives what is one of the best descriptions of that which cannot be described by quoting a saying that was hundreds of years old:
“‘In him we live and move and have our being.’”
Let this phrase settle deep in your soul: God is in whom we live and move and have our being.
God is here.
God Is
When Moses asked for God’s name, this was the reply: “I am who I am. This is what you will tell the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you” (Exodus 3:14). God’s name is “I AM.”
Being itself.
If this is mind-blowing, it should be because our finite minds cannot fathom the infinite breadth and depth of Undefinable!
We are living and moving and having our being in the Love that is the Source of all things.
Sit quietly and ponder the awe and wonder of it All.
