“Love is our true destiny. We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone – we find it with another.” – Thomas Merton

1 Corinthians 13:1-2
If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.

These words remind me of what almost all the people who have had Near Death Experiences say in giving their accounts: Love is the whole reason for our earthly experience.
We are here specifically to experience love and then to express that love.
Love is the bottom line.
This is what St. Paul is stating in today’s scripture verses.
It’s also what Jesus said when he told us the two greatest commandments were to love God with all of your heart, soul, and mind and to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:36-39).
And then he took it to another level: “Love your enemies” (Matthew 5:44).
It makes me wonder about all the endeavors we dedicate our lives to.
I find it very helpful to stop and assess from time to time what my motivations and objectives are.
Is love my top priority?
Are my words and actions motivated by love…or my ego?
