Luke 4:17-19

Jesus unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.”

After reading this passage from Isaiah in the synagogue of his hometown of Nazareth, Jesus told the people that this scripture passage “is fulfilled in your hearing.”

In other words, Jesus said that he was the one that the prophet was speaking about.

This passage is sometimes referred to as Jesus’ mission statement.

If you identify as Christian, then as a follower of Jesus, his mission would also be your mission.

Some might have a more intensive involvement in his mission than others, but all Christians would take part to some extent.

We are all called to “bring glad tidings to the poor” and “to proclaim liberty to captives and recovering of sight to the blind” and “to let the oppressed go free.”

And in following Jesus’ example, this is all accomplished with non-violence.

This is absolutely essential.

We might take a few moments to assess how we are doing in these areas.

If you were to die today, would people be able to remember you as someone who stood up for the poor and helped those who were in need of being freed from oppression…all through non-violence?

In union with you, I am asking for the Spirit to come upon us and open our eyes to how we can better carry out Christ’s mission.
