Jeremiah 20:10
Yes, I hear the whisperings of many: “Terror on every side! Denounce! Let us denounce him!” All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine.

The prophet Jeremiah is in misery in today’s scripture passage.
He feels betrayed in doing what he thought God called him to do.
The people did not heed Jeremiah’s prophecy but instead turned on him.
That’s what always happens to prophets.
Jesus knew this well.
Look at what happened to Martin Luther King, Jr.
When you stand up for the marginalized, you can expect to be slammed by those in power, those who are very comfortable with the status quo.
I’m convinced that many people define themselves by finding someone or something to be against.
This reflects the ages old practice of scapegoating which is defined as: “Blaming someone or something for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.”
Let us blame the desperate immigrants coming here as the problem instead of trying to find and fix the root problems that are causing them to flee their countries.
Or, let us blame the immigrants instead of fixing an immigration system that has been broken for many years resulting in a process that takes 10 to 20 years for a person to legally come.
Jesus called on us to care “for the least of these” stating that whatever we did to them, we did to him (Matthew 25:40).
Our mission here is to take part in the Flow of God’s loving creativity so that the kingdom of God, as Jesus called it, can come into being in this time and place.
Jesus warned us that we would be persecuted, but he also said: “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way” (Luke 6:23).
