Matthew 21:44

Jesus said, “I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.”

+++

The Aramaic words that Jesus used that have been translated as the “kingdom of God” would be more accurately translated as the peaceful and spacious realm of Unconditional Love.

Jesus had just told a parable about a very unconscious and violent action taken by a group of people.

That’s when he said today’s verse.

Jesus is also quoted elsewhere in scripture as saying that the kingdom of God or kingdom of heaven is among or within you (Luke 17:21).

In other words, it’s always available.

But it’s not accessible to those who are not consciously aware of it.

When you are instead operating from a self-protecting and self-centered ego, you will be focusing on separating, dividing, or personal gain.

That will lead to divisive and hurtful actions.

When you are present to the now, letting go of the mental commentaries and simply resting in the Divine Presence, the kingdom of God comes alive.

You experience the peaceful and spacious realm of Unconditional Love that is one with all.

Some form of meditation such as Centering Prayer is helpful.

When living while firmly rooted in this realm of peace and abundance, you will naturally be more loving, forgiving, and compassionate.

You will, as Jesus put it, “produce much fruit” and probably will not even be aware of it.

Jeremiah 17:5

Thus says God: Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings, who makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from God.

+++

Each of us is a divine, sacred being loved unconditionally by God.

We come from Love and will return to Love.

Remember, God is Love (1 John 4:8).

God self-identified as “I AM” to Moses (Exodus 3:14).

God is Beingness.

You might say that God is the Creative Energy of Love.

We are all rooted in God.

This is difficult for our minds to grasp.

It’s much more experiential than logical.

It’s more something you awaken to through being present to each moment.

You can’t experience the real Divine Presence if you are not present.

In other words, if you are constantly absorbed in your non-stop thoughts, you are not present to Life.

When we continually look to human beings for affirmation or approval, when we look to material things or accolades to fulfill us, our hearts turn away from God.

God is always here and present in your deepest essence.

Jesus instructed us to seek first the kingdom of God and then everything else will be given to us besides (Matthew 6:33).

In other words, seek the spacious realm of peace and love within you.

Stop.

Take a deep breath.

Be present right now.

Let go into this Loving Presence.

What do you lack?

Nothing!

You are loved.

Live grounded in this Loving Presence and whatever you truly need will come to you.

Psalm 31:5-6

Free me from the net they have set for me, for you are my refuge. Into your hands I commend my spirit; you will redeem me, God of truth.

+++

Sometimes it can feel like the walls are falling in on us.

It can seem like we are immersed in trouble and persecution is surrounding us.

These are situations of life in this earthly realm and in these human bodies.

But as Pierre Teilhard de Chardin said, “We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

Struggles here are actually opportunities for growth.

This is where the rubber meets the road as they say.

It’s where we can really be challenged as to whether we will respond in love.

It’s where you have to trust that there is a Bigger Picture, a Love that is in the fabric of all-that-is, in which we live and move and have our being as St. Paul put it (Acts 17:28).

These troubling life situations are not caused by God but by human delusion based on ego and fear.

These situations may cause your body physical harm, but they will not harm your soul, or what some would call your consciousness or your true self or your spirit.

That’s why Jesus quoted today’s psalm in his dying words, “Into your hands I commend my spirit” (Luke 23:46).

Despite the horrendous situation and the suffering imposed on him through human unconsciousness and delusion, Jesus trusted that God would find a way.

Love would find a way.

As St. Paul said in his first letter to the Corinthians, chapter 13 verses 7 and 8, “(Love) bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”

That, my friend, is the Gospel.

True Self

Matthew 23:11-12

“The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

+++

In today’s scripture verses, Jesus is taking to task the religious leaders of the time, the Pharisees, for holding the people to the letter of the law without any regard to compassion.

He said that they “tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them” (Matthew 23:4).

Jesus further criticizes them for loving to take the place of honor.

But Jesus says the greatest is actually the one who serves and the one who humbles himself.

The real problem he’s pointing to is that many people have let their egos rule their lives.

The ego is part of our brain’s operating system.

It usually concocts an image of who I am with itself as the center of the universe.

This is what Thomas Merton called your false self.

It’s an illusion.

The ego wants to protect its constructed image of you and make sure “you” succeed.

But as is many times quoted, EGO stands for: Edge God Out.

Your true self is divine and perfect.

Your soul is eternal and will not die when your physical body does.

Your soul has a purpose in this realm to give and receive love.

Once you become conscious of your soul, your true self, your unique reflection of the Divine, you are able to recognize the antics of your ego.

You will recognize the many thoughts you have that are not loving and are not recognizing the oneness of all in God.

A meditation practice such as Centering Prayer is very helpful in this regard.

Once you are aware of your ego, then you are able to allow the ego to be an instrument in helping you to share your gifts, to actually manifest love in the here and now.

Then you will naturally serve and you will no doubt be unaware of your humility.

When the ego is working in tandem with your true self, humility and service naturally happen.

And happiness will be a natural byproduct of your daily life.

Luke 6:37-38

Jesus said to his followers, “Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you.”

+++

There are consequences for our actions.

The point Jesus is making is that when you make someone else the other, in a sense less than yourself, it comes back to you.

Just as our negative actions come back to us, so do the positive things we do.

This really is much like the Buddhist and Hindu theory of Karma that says what happens to a person, happens because they caused it with their own actions.

I believe we will one day understand that we are all more connected than we can conceive with our human brains.

Richard Rohr writes about this in one of his reflections on his Center for Action and Contemplation website in regard to quantum physics where he states:

“It appears that one particle of any entangled pair “knows” what is happening to another paired particle—even though there is no known means for such information to be communicated between the particles, which are separated by sometimes very large distances.”

Rohr then quotes Ilia Delio: “If things can affect one another despite distance or space-time coordinates, then nature is not composed of material substances but deeply entangled fields of energy; the nature of the universe is undivided wholeness.” (1).

We are all part of this wholeness.

As St. Paul put it: “You are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27).

What if we truly looked at each other, all creatures, the Earth, and the universe as connected, as part of a Whole?

This is how Jesus could command us to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44).

This seems almost impossible!

But, as Jesus told us, “for God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

We are all called to work for restoration because separation is truly a delusion.

Breathe in the Oneness of All.

Psalm 130:6

My soul looks for the Lord more than sentinels for daybreak.

+++

Today’s scripture speaks to us of the importance of being present.

We find such reminders throughout the bible and from Jesus himself.

Remember where Jesus tells the parable about the servants who light their lamps and wait for their master’s return?

The master finds them vigilant on his arrival (Luke 12:35-37).

In today’s psalm, the soul is to be more watchful for God than sentinels for daybreak, sentinels being guards whose job is to stand and keep watch.

The first breakthrough in this regard would be awareness.

How many people are simply caught up in their thoughts all the time and aren’t even aware of it?

They are so identified with their non-stop-thinking-mind that they think they are those thoughts.

Stop for a moment and observe your thoughts.

Who is the observer?

It’s your true self, your soul.

So, allow your thoughts to cease.

Just be present right now.

Isn’t that pleasant?

Peace.

A meditation practice such as Centering Prayer will be very helpful in bringing this awareness of presence into your everyday life.

St. Paul said in God we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).

The Divine Presence is always present.

It’s the great “I Am” (Exodus 3:14).

Spend some time simply being present to your surroundings.

Give yourself a real treat by doing it amidst nature.

I did this recently on a retreat in the middle of acres and acres of farmland where I came upon some cows in a pasture.

In my immersion in the moment, I was blindsided by the Divine Presence in several moments of Transcendent Peace.

I was reminded of Psalm 46: “Be still and know that I am God.”

Be still and know.

Be still.

Be.

Matthew 7:7-8

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

+++

These words of Jesus can be confounding because we can all think of things we may have asked God for and did not receive.

But I think there is a deeper truth here.

God is not in some distant place where we need to call out and hope we get heard.

God is here.

As St. Paul said, in God we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).

God is as close to us as our breath.

Ruah.

That’s the Hebrew word for breath, air, wind, as well as spirit.

Our Loving Source is in the air we breathe.

What is your spirit, your soul, longing for?

This is not something superficial like, “I want a candy bar.”

When you sit in silent prayer, in meditation such as Centering Prayer, when you are one with your breathing, what is it that you want?

God, like a loving parent, might not guide you to what you want, but will definitely guide you to what you need.

If you are attentive to the Spirit’s movement.

When you are in tune with your inner voice, with your true self, the desires of your heart will rise.

Then you will be invited to take a step out of your comfort zone and go where the Spirit leads you.

Breathe deeply.

You are being led to wholeness.

With each step you are receiving and you are finding.

Expect a door to be opened.

Isaiah 55:10-11

Yet just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; It shall not return to me empty, but shall do what pleases me, achieving the end for which I sent it.

+++

As I’ve often said, God is love itself (1 John 4:8).

God is Goodness itself.

As the prophet Isaiah states today, God gives rain and snow as total grace to the earth.

And then the magic happens.

Seeds are produced which are planted by the sower.

Bread is made from the products of the earth which then feeds the hungry.

Through the prophet, God’s words will do the same.

They will be planted in all who hear them.

Then the magic happens.

The words take root and inspire the listener to take action on behalf God.

Or should I say, on behalf of Love.

Or should I say, on behalf of Goodness.

Each of us is given life and eternal life as sheer gift.

It is by total Grace.

How will we, in turn, share it?

How will we use our gifts and talents to spread this love and goodness?

It takes an open heart to receive the outpouring of Grace that God continuously gives, but that we might not be paying attention to.

It takes surrender.

It takes attentive listening through some form of meditation such as Centering Prayer, and being present to the Divine Presence that is always here, right now.

Be still.

You are loved.

Allow that Love to lead you.

Matthew 25:40

“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me.”

+++

Today’s scripture comes from the famous parable that Jesus told about the end of time when a king will separate the sheep from the goats.

The sheep get safe passage to the eternal kingdom, while the goats get dispatched to eternal punishment.

And what is it that the sheep did to earn such a reward?

Jesus says, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me” (Matthew 25:35-36).

The saved sheep don’t seem to know what he’s talking about.

That’s when Jesus says today’s scripture verse: “Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me.”

So, when there is someone in need, that is Jesus.

This parable is rather earth-shattering for the listener.

It was a type of teaching meant to make the listener unsettled and to wrestle with it.

But when you know that God is love (1 John 4:8) and not a tyrant, you know that the message is sent in love.

It’s not about fear of punishment but awakening to the Loving Presence.

This life is not about you.

It’s about us.

It’s about everyone and everything.

God is in all things.

As Jesus also said: “You will realize that I am in God and you are in me and I in you” (John 14:20).

To not care for someone in need is to not care for Jesus.

It is to not care for God.

It’s also to not care for yourself.

What Jesus wants us to know is that we are all in this together.

The master teacher knows that the listeners to this story will be asking themselves if they are sheep or goats.

And let’s face it, no one can perfectly be the sheep all the time.

We are both the sheep and the goats.

Jesus is trying to wake us up to our responsibility to care for all.

May we wake up to this reality and live it.

The results are both immediate and eternal.

Luke 9:23-25

Then Jesus said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?

+++

The first followers of Jesus were known as “the Way” likely because Jesus taught a way of life.

He was showing his followers the path to becoming their true selves, to living an authentic life as a spiritual being in a human body.

Jesus had various sayings that got right to the heart of the matter, such as today’s teaching.

To deny yourself is to turn away from your false self, the construction concocted by your ego.

It’s not a bad self, it’s just not the self you were meant to be.

Our egos just want us to fit-in and belong in whatever setting we find ourselves, usually based on our parents’ or cultural or religious norms.

To take up your cross is to accept the daily struggles of life.

If you follow the way of Jesus by reaching out to help those in need, including those who are cast out, being a peacemaker, and by being a loving presence to everyone and everything, you will soon know the meaning of “taking up your cross.”

You will definitely meet resistance from those who like the status quo, who want to keep the advantage of power, possessions and prestige.

The paradox is, when you let go of all the ego-generated delusions and follow the way of Jesus, you start to find your true self.

You rise from the ashes of the ego-delusion and find your real life.

You live as a whole and complete person.

That’s salvation.

What could be more important than that?
