Contemplative Connection

Silence is the portal to peace beyond understanding.

Matthew 6:6

“But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.”

+++

We like to barrage God with our requests…and that’s okay.

But when Jesus was asked specifically how to pray…he instructed us to go to our inner room.

And then he went on to say, “In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him (Matthew 6:7-8).”

So…it would appear that silence speaks volumes.

As 16th century mystic John of the Cross said, “God’s first language is silence.”

13th and 14th century mystic Meister Eckhart said, “There is a language so beautiful that it is never spoken. There is a deep sort of silence that may never adequately fall into words. That, I tell you, is more valuable than any jewel or any diamond.”

Personally, I was never taught anything about this. When I was growing up, I was only taught rote, recited prayers…which seems oddly contradictory to what Jesus taught!

I have since found great peace and direction from my times of silence with God.

It’s the practice of letting go…or dying to self.

Jesus put it this way: “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit (John 12:24).”

He also said, “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it (Matthew 10:39).”

Contemplative prayer is like finding a treasure hidden in plain sight…available to everyone who closes their eyes and listens.

Christianity 101

Love is the only way to peace and harmony.

Matthew 5:43-45

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.”

+++

Once again, for Jesus, love is the bottom line.

That’s not just in dealing with the people you like…but the people you don’t like…and also the people who don’t like you!

Jesus tells us we must do what goes against every fiber of our being…actually love our enemies.

I mean…is he serious?

That’s what he said!

Seems we have a way of disregarding some of Jesus’ most difficult teachings…or spinning them into something easier to handle.

Are we forgiving and loving the people who have deeply harmed us?

Are we praying for terrorists?

Instead of trying to change someone else…Jesus asks each of us to change.

Such transformation can only happen through grace…through a Higher Power.

Jesus modeled this kind of love and forgiveness to us…and then called each of us to follow him.

If we do this, not only will our lives be changed for the good…but we will also start a ripple-effect that will help change the world.

Be Renewed

Let go and let Love lead you.

(Listen to my song “Heal Me” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Psalm 5:3-4

To you I pray, O Lord; at dawn you will hear my cry; at dawn I will plead before you and wait.

+++

I believe prayer keeps us in relationship with God.

If we aren’t praying…then God can seem very distant.

But when we pray…it’s personal.

Since we know that God is Love (1 John 4:8)…then we know that God wants what’s best for us.

But many times…we don’t know what that is.

I know what I want…but what if God wants something different?

Sometimes what I want is really what my ego wants.

One thing for sure…what God wants for me will be just what my true self needs to flourish and grow in love.

So by all means…cry out to God.

Make your requests known…and then wait in confidence that in seeking what you want…you will receive what God wants for you.

It may not be what you asked for…but it’ll be exactly what you need.

Our Loving Creator wants us to receive what will make us whole and complete.

Waitlisten…and trust.

Glorious

meadow_stream

We are immersed in the awe and wonder of God.

(Listen to my song “How Magnificent, Wondrous and Glorious” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Psalm 65:12-13

You adorn the year with your bounty; your paths drip with fruitful rain. The untilled meadows also drip; the hills are robed with joy.

+++

God lavishly pours out unconditional Love in creating…giving from an endless reservoir of Grace.

Creation is on-going

But just like the seasons change…all things give back to their Creator in an endless cycle of giving and receiving.

For in all things…life-leads-to-death-leads-to-new-life

It seems that humans are the only created beings who have a choice whether to consciously take part in this Flow of giving-and-receiving.

We can instead choose to cling and hold onto God’s gifts…falsely believing they belong to us.

We can pretend that nothing has to change…that death does not have to be dealt with.

This path leads to a dead end.

The other choice…to freely share the gifts we’ve been given…leads to life.

This is the way that allows God’s creative flow to continue through us.

It allows us to participate in what Jesus called the “reign of God.”

May we all graciously share with others the amazing bounty that has been poured upon us…and may we be filled with the awe and wonder of it all!

The Great “I Am”

trees_twisted_road

Be in the now and truly live.

(Listen to my song “Take the Road Less Traveled” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Psalm 16:11

You will show me the path to life, abounding joy in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever.

+++

We all need a little guidance in finding our way in life.

I think we can all agree that God…the Source of life itself…would be the best guide.

God is always here…but unfortunately, we are usually somewhere else!

We tend to identify with our thoughts which are mostly fretting over the past or worrying about the future.

God is Presence itself…and when we can truly be present…we lack nothing.

We experience “abounding joy.”

You may recall that Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). He shows us the path to abundant life (John 10:10).

Jesus was always present to those he came in contact with. He gave them his undivided attention.

Presence!

Back in the 1700’s…French Jesuit priest Jean Pierre de Caussade called it the “Sacrament of the Present Moment.”

When you are present to someone…including yourself…you are entering the Presence of God.

Make it a practice to regularly read what Jesus said in the gospels and then sit in silence…allowing his words to sink in.

Allow your thoughts to drift away.

Simply sit with the One who wants nothing more than to commune with you…and show you the path to life

Taking this path will require you to change…to take risks…to leave something, someone or some way of life behind.

But it will be in the changein the process…that you will be transformed.

In that transformation…there will surely be joy…both now and forever!

Illumine

May you channel love to the world…as only you uniquely can.

(Listen to my song “May I Be Light” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

Matthew 5:15-16

“Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

+++

Each of us is a reflection of our Creator.

Scripture tells us that humankind is made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27).

It also tells us that “God is light” (1 John 1:5) and “God is love” (1 John 4:8).

So when we are reflecting Love through our unique human form…we are shining a light.

Jesus said that each of us has a light.

This light…or reflection of God…is meant to be shared in the darkness of the world.

We do this by channeling God’s unconditional love which helps build the kingdom of God…or realm of Godhere and now.

Allow God’s light to shine in you.

What are your gifts and talents?

What do you enjoy doing?

Live these questions and see what answers develop.

Pay attention to your ego’s desires for power, prestige and possessions…things that can never truly satisfy.

Observe this…and allow those desires to dissipate.

Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).

That means now…and forever.

The Way and the Truth and the Life

calm_water_tree

Love is the self-emptying path we’re all called to follow.

(Listen to my song “Love God” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Mark 12:30-31

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'”

+++

This scripture passage is the keystone of Christianity.

Jesus gave this reply when asked to specify the most important commandment.

Notice he did not give a list of rules and regulations.

Basically…Jesus said that Love is the bottom line.

This kind of love calls each us to change and be transformed.

And this transformation is not just a one-time thing.

It’ll be continuous since there is no way any of us in our humanness can reach the perfection of Love that is God.

Jesus underlined the height and depth of transformation required when he also commanded us to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:27).

How does your logical mind deal with that one?

Jesus is calling each of us into a new way of thinking…one of non-duality that transcends the binary “either-or” thinking of the mind…to a “both-and” way of perceiving that is able to accept what is without separating or excluding.

This is the only way capable of compassion.

To love in this manner, instead of asking another person to change, I must ask myself to.

Good News

meadow_green_trees

We are in the midst of grace upon grace.

(Listen to my song “The Way You Are” by clicking HERE)

+++

2 Timothy 1:9-11

He saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according to his own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began, but now made manifest through the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, for which I was appointed preacher and apostle and teacher.

+++

When St. Paul speaks…he speaks a mouthful!

Read the scripture passage again…and allow his words to sink in.

God saved us not by our works but by grace in Christ “before time began.”

This, my friend, is original blessing.

It’s a “saving” that accepts us, loves us and makes us whole.

Christ became human.

In other words, “the Word became flesh” (John 1:14) in Jesus and showed us that death is an illusion.

It does not have the final say.

Jesus also showed us the way to eternal life in each moment of our lives through the way he lived each day and through the way he died.

St. Paul, who was first a persecutor of Christians and involved in their murders, was transformed into the greatest evangelist of all time by grace.

This same man, who never met the historical Jesus in the flesh but in a mystical experience on the road, said he was “appointed preacher and apostle and teacher.”

No matter what we’ve done, the same kind of transformation is promised to us today.

Thank God for grace and compassion!

Praise Be

Psalm 90:14

Fill us at daybreak with your love, that all our days we may sing for joy.

+++

When you awaken each morning…why not acknowledge your gratefulness at being alive?

Consciously take a breath.

It’s a new day with endless possibilities of seeing, hearing, and feeling the blessings God is pouring out to us without cost.

Listen to the sound of birds greeting the dawn.

It’s as if they were awakened from their sleep by the voice of their Creator saying, “You are loved. Be what you are!”

And then they respond in the fullness of their being…praising God with the beautiful voices they’ve been given.

God is saying the same thing to us: “You are loved…be what you are!

How will you respond with the fullness of your being?

Transformation in Progress

There is a Great Love leading us through our struggles.

(Listen to my song “Love Will Always Lead You Home” on YouTube by clicking HERE)

+++

Psalm 91:15

He will call upon me and I will answer; I will be with him in distress.

+++

No one of us wants to go through the valley of the shadow of death.

We don’t enjoy trials and tribulations.

But…I know that those are the times in my life when I most felt the presence of God.

There was Something-larger-than-myself…a Divine Presence…carrying me through the turmoil.

And on the other side of the struggle…came transformation and new life.

Always.

God is in the transformation business.

That’s what Love does…when you hang in the struggle and cling to hope…trusting that there is a Great Compassion drawing us forward…leading us to a deeper experience of Love.
