Matthew 4:21-22

Jesus walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.

The gospels were not written like news accounts are written by reporters today.

The writers of the gospels wanted to impart a deeper truth.

I’m thinking it’s unlikely that James and his brother John simply dropped everything when Jesus yelled out to them and walked away from their father and their livelihood.

The deeper truth is…they did eventually make a radical choice of following Jesus as their top priority.

It is a life choice.

It’s not just a decision to go to particular church or agree to certain beliefs.

To be a Christian is to follow Jesus.

That means doing what he did.

That means serving the poor and troubledall those on the margins.

That means feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked, caring for the sick, visiting the imprisoned(Matthew 25).

This is your calling as a human being: Love one another.

As Jesus said, “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (John 13:34).
