Unity

What do you suppose is God’s vision for the world?

Isaiah 2:4

They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; One nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again.

This utopian view is what the prophet Isaiah set out as the sacred goal.

This is what we should be working towards.

The existential truth is…we are already one but live in the delusion that we are not.

As Thomas Merton wrote, “My dear brothers and sisters, we are already one. But we imagine we are not. And what we have to recover is our original unity. What we have to be, is what we are.” (The Asian Journal of Thomas Merton)

I know unity can’t just happen overnight…but I get the sense that this vision isn’t even a long, long, long range consideration anymore.

Quite the opposite. It appears our culture glories in the swords and spears…and seems to look for reasons to go to war.

We are in sore need of more broad-minded, diplomatic, caring and compassionate leaders (and people in general).

Jesus gave us a great example of a strong leader who stood up to power with truth and integrity but with compassion while tirelessly working for unity and fairness.

This is the vision we are called to follow.
