Christianity?

Psalm 78:8

They were not to be like their ancestors, a rebellious and defiant generation, a generation whose heart was not constant, and whose spirit was not faithful to God.

I have hope in the latest generation of young people.

I have to.

My generation has been a great disappointment.

Not all, of course, but many.

I see their outrageous posts and comments on Facebook and other social media.

These people who identify as “Christian” somehow think that Christianity is consistent with calling for violent, armed-actions against people they disagree with.

They somehow think it’s consistent with waving Confederate flags.

They somehow think it’s consistent with the execution of mentally ill people on death row like Lisa Montgomery – or executing anyone for that matter.

They somehow think it’s consistent with turning desperate people back into the desert to die who are facing no hope.

Do they not know that Jesus showed us the face of God (John 14:7)?

Jesus said the greatest commandments were to love God and your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:34-40).

He commanded us to love your enemies (Matthew 5:44).

He said whatever you do for the least of these you do for me (Matthew 25:40).

Do the actions of armed militias and white supremacists have any resemblance to that Jesus?

Each of us needs to examine our hearts and determine if our spirit, our true self, is being faithful to God and the example of Jesus.

The Christianity that espouses violence is not Christianity.
