Mark 4:26-28

Jesus said, “This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.”

This is the main theme of Jesus’ mission.

He is instigating the coming of what he called the kingdom of God here on Earth.

He was inviting his followers into actively cooperating in the coming of this kingdom in the here and now.

His concern was not in getting us safely evacuated from here to a distant heavenly reward.

Many have missed this somehow.

It’s really quite amazing how many people miss it and continue to miss it.

I was among them until an awakening that inspired me to immerse myself into the gospels.

The kingdom of God is the experience of being under God’s reign.

Jesus tells us what is required to experience this now.

First, he gave us the two greatest commandments: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31).

He then commanded us to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44).

In the Beatitudes, Jesus said blessed are the merciful and the peacemakers (Matthew 5:7 and 5:9).

Then he made it quite clear how we are to put the love, mercy and peace of God’s kingdom into action: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me” (Matthew 25:35-36).

Jesus added, “Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).

It’s in carrying out these works of compassion in each moment that the kingdom of God blooms.

Then one day, perhaps God’s kingdom will come on earth as it is in heaven.
