James 5:1-3

Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth-eaten, your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you.

This passage seems to echo the words of Jesus when he said, “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 19:24).

The point isn’t that being “rich” or having material wealth is bad in and of itself.

The point is that when you have lots of material wealth, it is very difficult to not become attached to it.

It is very easy to allow it to consume you and distract you from being in relationship with those who aren’t rich in wealth.

Many times, those who are wealthy end up in big houses in expensive neighborhoods.

For such people, their circles may only include those who are also wealthy.

If those who are wealthy are able to continue to have an open and compassionate heart, they can be very generous in using their wealth to help those in need.

Those are the kind of rich people who are able to enter the kingdom of God as Jesus put it.

He was not talking about some future reward.

Jesus was talking about now.

He said that this kingdom of God, or kingdom of heaven, is found among you and within you (Luke 17:21).

It is the spacious realm of unconditional Love and Compassion.

This is who God isLove itself (1 John 4:8)!

When you are awakened to this Love within you, you can’t help but share it with those in need.

This Love-in-action will send lasting reverberations throughout the world.

So, at the time of your physical death, this Love will carry you seamlessly into the next heavenly realm.

Your wealth, clothingall of your material possessions – will be left behind.

Long after your wealth has rotted away, the Love that you lived and shared will go on eternally.
