“There is an irreducible opposition between the deep transcendent self that awakens only in contemplation, and the superficial, external self which we commonly identify with the first person singular.” – Thomas Merton

John 3:7-8
Jesus said, “Do not be amazed that I told you, ‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

This is a tough teaching for anyone who is caught up in their own mind.
When you think you are your thinking, these words of Jesus will be totally befuddling.
Many people are operating from their egos which have created a false-self based on cultural, parental, and religious norms.
But Jesus says we need to awaken to a new paradigm.
We need, in a sense, to be born again.
As Pierre Teilhard de Chardin said, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”
We are being called to awaken to the realization that we are spirit.
And our Loving Source is the Spirit from which we come, in whom we ‘live and move and have our being’ as St. Paul put it in Acts 17:28.
To get in touch with our Spiritual Source, we have to allow our minds to quiet.
Some type of meditation practice such as Centering Prayer is helpful.
We need to take time to simply be present to the Divine Presence which is all around us, and more importantly, inside us!
Jesus said that the kingdom of God is among you, which is also translated as within you (Luke 17:20-21).
When you are consciously in touch with the spacious realm of the sacred within, you will be moved to speak certain words and do certain actions on behalf of Love itself.
The inspiration will come out of the blue, like the wind.
You will find yourself being called to change, to go outside your comfort zone.
That is why many people resist.
They don’t want to change.
If you have the courage to listen and act, you will discover your true self and have life to the full.
As Jesus said: You must lose your life to find it (Matthew 16:25).
You must lose your old ego-concocted-life, to find your true life.
The only thing stopping you is fear which is an illusion.
May we allow the winds of the Spirit to direct us to freedom.
