Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?

I see such fear in people over God and over what will happen when they die.

It is so sad…and yet I, too, have to wrestle with the reward / punishment theology that was so prevalent in my upbringing and in many others who were raised Catholic or Christian.

Scripture actually tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8).

And this: “There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love” (1 John 4:18). 

In thousands and thousands of accounts from those who have had what is known as the Near Death Experience, we hear over and over about those who experienced the physical death of their bodies…but whose souls then encountered a Light of pure Love that was overwhelming and beyond description. They then returned to their bodies and were resuscitated.

I’m sure there will be sadness and regret when we realize how we failed so many times in sharing this Light with others when that was all that was expected of us.

So the wake-up call is to live in the light of this Love each and every day.
