Mark 10:29-30

Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and the for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.

+++

These are comforting words from Jesus to anyone who gives up everything for the sake of the gospel.

Interesting how it seems you get back all that you gave up!

But now you also get persecutions.

The good news is that you also get eternal life in the age to come.

So, first off, what is the gospel?

I’m thinking there would be a myriad of answers given because people believe various things.

For me, the gospel is that God loves you, everyone, and everything — unconditionally, and that we are to share that love through our words and actions.

I don’t really think that this requires you to literally walk away from your family and possessions.

But it might.

It depends on each person’s unique calling.

I do think it means that you must give up your attachments to family and possessions for the sake of the gospel.

The gospel must have first priority in your life.

And Jesus seems to indicate that you will receive everything back and much, much more in this present age.

That means now.

It’s not a reward given some distant day in a future heaven.

Although Jesus adds the part about eternal life in the age to come.

This means that if your top priority is to love God, neighbor, and self, if you are living that priority, you will be living it also eternally.

It’s always now, you know.

But Jesus gives us the sobering news that loving all people, even the ones, or perhaps especially the ones we aren’t supposed to love, will cost us.

We will be persecuted.

Take courage!

Love will win out.

After all, Love is who God is!

And as St. Paul said: “Nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God” (Romans 8:39).

That’s the Gospel…the Good News!

Psalm 111:2

Great are the works of God, exquisite in all their delights.

+++

We’ve all experienced the beauty of creation.

We’ve all been stunned by the awe and wonder of a mountain range or a brilliant sunrise or sunset.

What about the vast array of twinkling stars in a clear night sky?

The universe is a magnificent work of art that is still unfolding.

Creation is still happening.

Mixed into the fabric of all that is, is the Great Artisan.

God, or Love itself, is at work.

It’s at the cellular level of everything.

God is present in all things.

And as Jesus said, “I am in God and you are in me and I in you” (John 14:20).

We are all one in God.

That means that all things are sacred.

If we truly reverenced all that is, we would never do harm.

We would never pollute or desecrate.

But we know that human beings have free will.

We can choose greed and lust.

We can choose self-gratification over self-emptying-love.

We are the ones who have the option of being stewards of God’s creation or desecrators.

This choice must be part of all that we do – how we vote, how we shop, how we work – how we operate on a daily basis.

May our lives add to the glory of God’s magnificent masterpiece!

Psalm 103:1

Bless the LORD, my soul; all my being, bless God’s holy name!

+++

When it feels like the world is crumbling, when it feels like there is just so much pain and suffering, know that while there are many problems, nothing can truly harm you.

Sure, your physical body can be harmed.

But the real you, your soul, your spirit, is eternal.

Through Jesus we know that death is not the end.

Life goes on transformed.

We also know by many, many testimonies of Near Death Experiencers that Love is victorious.

After all, scripture tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8).

When Moses asked for God’s name, God said: “I AM” (Exodus 3:14).

That means God is Is-ness or Being itself.

So Being-ness or Is-ness is also Love.

St. Paul said that in God we “live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

So, in Love itself we exist.

This is heady stuff!

So let’s get out of our heads and into our hearts.

Simply let the experience of this Love in which we live bring you peace.

Breathe in deeply the breath of life.

Exhale the breath back that gives life to nature around you.

Though some human beings are acting in unconscious ways, we must be bearers of light and peace.

With each breath may we bless God, may all that we are be a blessing to all that is.

And may our words and actions be extensions of the Love that fills us.

James 5:1-3

Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth-eaten, your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you.

+++

This passage seems to echo the words of Jesus when he said, “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 19:24).

The point isn’t that being “rich” or having material wealth is bad in and of itself.

The point is that when you have lots of material wealth, it is very difficult to not become attached to it.

It is very easy to allow it to consume you and distract you from being in relationship with those who aren’t rich in wealth.

Many times, those who are wealthy end up in big houses in expensive neighborhoods.

For such people, their circles may only include those who are also wealthy.

If those who are wealthy are able to continue to have an open and compassionate heart, they can be very generous in using their wealth to help those in need.

Those are the kind of rich people who are able to enter the kingdom of God as Jesus put it.

He was not talking about some future reward.

Jesus was talking about now.

He said that this kingdom of God, or kingdom of heaven, is found among you and within you (Luke 17:21).

It is the spacious realm of unconditional Love and Compassion.

This is who God isLove itself (1 John 4:8)!

When you are awakened to this Love within you, you can’t help but share it with those in need.

This Love-in-action will send lasting reverberations throughout the world.

So, at the time of your physical death, this Love will carry you seamlessly into the next heavenly realm.

Your wealth, clothingall of your material possessions – will be left behind.

Long after your wealth has rotted away, the Love that you lived and shared will go on eternally.

Mark 7:33-35

Jesus took (the deaf man) off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”) And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly.

+++

What immediately strikes me here is the messiness of this healing.

This is not the picture of some all powerful God simply waving his hand like a magic act and, voila, instant cure!

This healing is very, shall we say, earthy.

It involves touching, spitting, and groaning.

It is very human.

It is very intimate.

I’m reminded of something very powerful and thought-provoking that Jesus said:

“Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these” (John 14:12).

Really?

We will do greater works than these?

Perhaps the translation that gives us, “whoever believes in me,” could be more accurately put, “whoever takes to heart my words and my ways” will do even greater things.

Perhaps Jesus is inviting us into opening ourselves to the Divine acting through us, to allow the Great Love that energizes all things to flow through us so that others can be healed and made whole.

Jesus was a whole-maker.

He didn’t question a person as to whether they deserved healing.

He didn’t use any litmus test to determine whether he would act.

This is the way of Love.

This is the way of Christ.

The question is: Will we do likewise?

Psalm 86:5

Lord, you are good and forgiving, most merciful to all who call on you.

+++

If God is love as scripture tells us (1 John 4:8), then God is also good.

And if God loves unconditionally, which is what Love would do, then God is certainly forgiving.

Jesus said to forgive always (Matthew 18:21-22).

He also said that you must forgive others or God won’t forgive you (Matthew 6:15).

That’s because you are, in a sense, me and I am you.

Jesus put it this way: “You will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you” (John 14:20).

He also said, “I am the vine, you are the branches” (John 15:5).

We are intrinsically linked together.

Or as St. Paul said, in God “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

There is a Oneness of all.

So, of course, God is good, forgiving, and most merciful.

When you find your mind telling you otherwise, know that those words are lies.

Our binary minds have a hard time fathoming such non-binary concepts as unconditional love.

Let go of your divisive thoughts.

Kindly dismiss them.

Set aside time for silent meditation or Centering Prayer.

Settle into the peace that surpasses all understanding.

It’s available right now.

As Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is among you” (Luke 17:21), also translated as, “The kingdom of God is within you.”

Mark 16:15

Jesus said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.”

+++

Today’s gospel reading starts just after a rather telling verse that was not included.

That’s where the resurrected Jesus appears to the apostles, all the men who had abandoned him, and “rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised” (Mark 16:14).

Also interesting how the writer reduced the women and namely Mary Magdalene to “those who saw him after he had been raised.”

The canonical gospels all agree about this.

But then Jesus makes a complete about-face and sends the apostles forth to proclaim the gospel to every creature.

So, he forgives without so much as a word from these guys.

This is the gospel.

God forgives.

God loves unconditionally.

I’m sure at this point the apostles knew that deeply in their hearts because the master had just taught them a real-life lesson in God’s forgiveness.

I find it also interesting that Jesus wanted his followers to proclaim the gospel to every creature.

Not just humans.

All creatures need to know they are loved and treasured.

We do this by being good stewards of the earth and all that lives on it.

This takes action.

It means being compassionate and caring for all the Earth and all that lives on it and in it.

And it means standing for those without power.

We are all called to do this.

No one is excluded from God’s love.

That’s what makes it Good News!

Mark 2:1-2

When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it became known that he was at home. Many gathered together so that there was no longer room for them, not even around the door, and he preached the word to them.

+++

Jesus had drawing power.

He could literally pack the house.

And it says that he preached the word to them.

That must have been some word!

So, what was Jesus saying that would be so enticing?

Was he promising the “10 Easy Steps to Wealth” or the “10 Easy Steps to Having a Successful Business”?

No, Jesus never spoke about being wealthy as a positive thing.

Not that it was a bad thing in and of itself, but Jesus did say that it would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 19:24).

He also said “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).

What Jesus was getting at is that if you have lots of stuff you can very easily get quite attached to that stuff and thereby miss seeing those in need.

What else did Jesus say?

He said “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9).

He said that loving God and your neighbor as yourself were the greatest commandments (Matthew 22:36-40).

And don’t forget that dreaded command to love your enemies (Matthew 5:44).

You have to admit, these statements are so counter-cultural and counter-intuitive.

Perhaps that, and the fact that Jesus must have been an impressive speaker with a good amount of charisma, all of that helped to draw crowds.

But most of all, Jesus reflected the unconditional love of God in the way he met and treated all the broken.

He didn’t reject any of them.

And don’t forget that all those people listening to Jesus were looking for hope.

They were under the brutal rule of the Roman empire.

Jesus let the people know they were not forgotten by God, but loved dearly.

Are we poor in spirit? Peacemakers? Are we loving God and our neighbor as ourselves?

What about our enemies?

Are we welcoming to all?

Each of us must consider Jesus’s teachings and whether they are reflected in on our words and actions.

This, my friend, is the path to the kingdom of God.

Right here.

Right now.

Mark 1:40-41

A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.”

+++

Why do people suffer with illnesses?

Why are many people afflicted with various diseases?

Why do bad things happen to good people?

These are the questions humankind has struggled over for millennia.

Could it be that this is the only way we can truly experience empathy and compassion?

Let’s face it, if everything was perfect, we probably would be quite self-centered and completely under the control of our egos.

Have you noticed how people tend to suddenly come together and care for each other in times of trouble?

It seems it takes a tragedy to jolt people out of their self-centered-trance and wake-up to the realization that we are all part of the same human species and that we all share the same planet with creatures, plants, and trees.

Everything that has life shares in that One Life.

In today’s scripture verses, we see a man afflicted with leprosy begging Jesus to heal him.

And it says that Jesus was moved with pity.

He was emotionally moved.

This is compassion.

It’s perhaps the one common denominator shared by each human being regardless of their religious beliefs.

Many Near Death Experiencers say that this earthly realm is the only place where such adversities can be experienced so that we can truly know what it is to have compassion for another, or where we can experience compassion from another when we need it.

Put yourself in the leper’s shoes in today’s passage.

Perhaps you are struggling with an illness or affliction?

Perhaps you are grieving over a loss?

Feel the hand of Jesus as he reaches out and touches you.

Now, put yourself in the shoes of Jesus.

Who in your life is hurting, and in need of a healing touch?

Perhaps that touch, that listening ear and kind word, can come from you.

We’re all in this together.

1 Samuel 3:6-7

Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I am,” he said. “You called me.” But he answered, “I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.” Samuel did not yet recognize the LORD, since the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.

+++

This is a very meaningful passage today about a young minister named Samuel under the mentorship of Eli.

Samuel is awakened from his sleep by the voice of God calling him.

But, as the passage states, Samuel did not yet recognize the voice since the word of God had not yet been revealed to him.

It takes three attempts by God with Samuel returning to Eli each time, before Eli realizes that Samuel is not dreaming.

Eli tells Samuel that the next time this happens, to answer: “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

This is a great story for each of us to place ourselves into.

Have you heard God call you?

I have heard the call, but I admit, it’s not always easy to determine if the voice is God’s or mine.

It takes discernment.

The more you are in tune with God, the more you set aside time for listening in contemplative prayer, for meditation like Centering Prayer, for being present to life, the easier it is to hear the call.

It might not be in audible words.

It might be more of a feeling, more of a nudge in your heart.

One major time this happened in my life was when I was at the depths of despair over my career path.

I was a successful radio news anchor, but I was miserable.

The call came on the first Friday of March in 1997 as I sat dejected on my living room couch, wondering what I could possibly do to change my life.

At the moment I said, “I give up,” I heard in my heart, “Get your guitar.”

Since I hadn’t touched my guitar in ten years, that was a really bizarre thing to hear!

Long-story short, I started playing my guitar and writing songs.

The songs led me back to college for a graduate degree in Religious and Pastoral Studies, and ten years after hearing the call – I left my career in radio news and entered ministry.

I now have four albums of original music about my spiritual journey in this human experience.

I’ve written two devotional books to help others on their journeys.

The truth is, the call of God could also have been heard in my daily dis-ease over life in general.

When you are in tune with the Spirit within you, you begin to allow the Spirit to guide you.

It’s how Jesus could tell his followers in today’s Gospel reading from the first chapter of Mark that he had decided to leave the town where he was so popular due to his many healings there.

Jesus told them, “Let us go to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.”

May you listen to your inner voice so that you, too, may know the purpose for which you have come!
